The Academy Awards are televised every year and we watch to see who will win the coveted Oscar . There are awards given in many categories, the best writer, the best producer and the best music score. But everyone waits for the drum roll ….for the actor and actress who will win the Oscar for their roles. There is also an award given for the person or persons who were the best supporters in their particular roles. Who will win the best supporting actress and actor? How well would the primary actors and actresses have done without their supporters?
Much of my adult life I have spent working as an administrative support person in an office setting. My role was to assist the person in charge with whatever tasks needed to be done. My role was one of a support staff member.
Based on these awards and roles, we may conclude that having a good supporting staff is very important in order to achieve success.
What about our “supporting” role as Christians? When Jesus ascended into heaven He left his disciples with these words, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you and lo I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” Matthew 28:18-20 KJV. The disciples were left with instructions. They were not to go back to their occupations before Christ, as fisherman or tax collectors. Their lives were completely changed. Once Christ is in our hearts, our lives should never be the same. His objectives are now to be ours. We serve a mighty God and He certainly does not need us but He has given us the opportunity to serve Him. He wants us to be busy doing His work until He returns, to be the hands, feet, and eyes of Jesus. We are to be the supporters of Christ. What a privilege to be on His staff!
How do we handle so much responsibility? Thankfully, Christ did not leave us with this assignment and just send us on our own. He has equipped us with the necessary tools to do His work. He has given us first of all the power of the Holy Spirit who will guide and direct us in what we are to do. If we are in tune with what the Holy Spirit is telling us we will never be wrong. Secondly, He has also given us His Word, the Bible, where we can turn for guidance. And thirdly, He has given us a network of people to encourage and support us along the way. We might call them our “support staff”. He has truly given us all the resources we need to be successful for Him.
Because there is such a great need in our world for people who care, our actions and words can speak volumes about Jesus to them. My husband loves to sing a song entitled “Follow Me” and one of the verses say, “If just a cup of water I place within your hand then just a cup of water is all that I demand.” Whatever the Lord asks us to do we are to do for Him. It may be going across the world to the mission field or it may simply be giving a cup of water to someone in need.
Just as actors/actresses desire to receive an Oscar for their performances, we too as Christians should strive to hear one day. “....Well done thou good and faithful servant, thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” Matthew 25:21 KJV.
So let us be busy doing the work of our Lord until he returns. The world needs to hear and see in our lives that Jesus is real and that He does make a difference! Let us be Jesus' support staff!
