Aromas awaken my slumber,
Bacon frying, coffee perking,
Distant sounds of thunder.
Pots and pans are rattling,
Dishes tinkle my ears,
Sounds of bustling here and there,
Calm my stormy fears.
Smells of delight mixed with oak,
Burning at just the right ember,
Granny cooks on a wood burner stove
“What warmth!” I now remember.
I pull the covers back over my head,
For just a few minutes longer.
Dozing on and off again,
The aromas getting stronger.
Finally I rise and run to the table,
Granny smiles and gently scolds,
“Go wash up and wake your brothers!”
I do as I am told.
In haste I go and make the rounds,
Quietly rousing all to get up.
“Breakfast is ready!” I whisper,
They head for their coffee cups.
Sometime in the afternoon,
Sweetness wafts through the house,
Cookies baking in her oven,
Bring gleeful smiles and shouts!
Evenings filled with heavenly scents,
Of Granny frying chicken,
Done so right and crispy,
Our fingers we are licking.
Before each meal we must say grace,
Lord, teach our daily lessons.
Thank you for Granny and her stove,
What a double blessing!
Mouth watering foods every time,
Come from a wood burning stove.
How she does it, I haven’t a clue,
She must have help from above!
