Today, she started a 24 hour fast. The cold, cloudy day made it dark inside. The only thing that lit the living room was the fire in the fireplace and a few candles.
She did part of her daily Bible reading before she broke out in prayer. "Dear Lord, I believe that my calling is to be in the medical profession. I feel you put the desire in me to be a nurse. My mom is a nurse, my dad is a doctor. You allowed me to have a scholarship which paid for my schooling. I’ve always been a people person. I know that I’d serve you well. I feel that I have a heart for helping hurting people. Lord I’ve been looking for two months. I have sent out resumes applying to jobs every place I can think of. I had a few interviews, but no one has called me. Please help me! I desire to serve by ministering to others."
Stephanie prayed like this for about two hours, then decided to go out and get the mail. She put on her heavy, winter coat and her boots. Then she trekked though six inches of snow to get to the mailbox. Her hand shook as she opened it.-- Two bills and two envelopes from places that she applied to. She slammed the mailbox shut and started to cry as she walked back to the house.
"Dear Lord, do you care about me? Do you care that I… I…I am hitting a brick wall?” She then plopped down on the porch steps. "I know that they’re rejection letters. Do you care about me? What have I done wrong? Dear Jesus, do you care about me?" Stephanie didn’t even look at the envelopes; she ripped them up and threw them on the ground.
"Lord, I wonder if I misunderstood you. You blessed me with the scholarship, school was so easy. What do I get for all of my hard work? NO JOB!"
After sitting out in the snow sobbing for an hour, she went inside to check the voice mail. It beeped, she punched in the code and listened. "Hi, I'm Missy from Fairview Hospital calling for Stephanie Edwards. You recently interviewed for a nursing position. I’d like to talk to you more about that position. Could you call me back as soon as possible?"
Her hands were trembling as she dialed the phone number as quickly as she could.
"Fairview Hospital, How may I direct your call?"
"I need to speak to Missy in HR." The phone rang about six times, as Stephanie paced back and forth .
"Human Resources, How may I help you?"
"Is this Missy?"
"One moment please." The elevator music blared in her ear for about five minutes then a cheery voice came on the line. "Hi this is Missy."
"I’m Stephanie Edwards; you called me about the nursing position."
"Oh yeah, just let me find your application.” There was a sound of paper shuffling. "We want to offer you the job, but there is one exception. We need you to work overnights instead of second shift. Is that something that you’re willing to do?"
"Yes…Oh yes, thank you, I’ll take the job. I can‘t wait until Monday."
"Okay, come to HR on Monday morning at nine. We'll do the paperwork and you’ll train on first shift for a week then you'll start on overnights."
"I'll see you on Monday." Stephanie hung up. She screamed, "Thank you...Jesus!"
