Oh, Good Grief

As a new member of Faith Writers, I have waited anxiously to enter the Challenge. Today, at last, they have announced their new subject. It is: Blog. Oh my gosh! Blog! I don’t even have a dictionary in my house that contains that word!

How is an old broad like me to write about a foreign subject like this, as foreign to me as anything foreign that you can imagine? I can say that I have actually read a blog. That is because I met a friend’s friend who is blogging (is that a word?) about having cancer. The only reason that I was able to find such a thing is because she e-mailed me, and her e-mail had a link to her blog, so all I had to do was click. Even I can do that!

I have to admit her blog was interesting. There was a gorgeous nature picture of mountains reflected in water and her statement of her love for her Lord. There were pictures of her and her animals. I guess the neatest thing, though, was that she could say anything she wanted regarding her cancer: her fears, her hopes and her trust in the Lord. Her blog seemed to give her a freedom of expression that was comfortable for her, for good news and for bad.

Maybe that is what blogs are all about, putting yourself “out there.” That could be freeing or terrifying, depending upon your nature or your attitude at the time of writing. One problem though: what is put “out there” can never be retrieved. It can be deleted off the blog, but not out of the minds of those who have read it. Bloger beware!

This was a great first entry. You made me smile. I could definitely relate to you as I don't quite understand blogs. I think you did a fantastic job covering what I think is a very difficult topic.

My only suggestion is don't mention FW or the challenge. The top 10 overall winners are published in an anthology and those readers may not be aware of FW or the challenge. Oh yeah and I think it's bloggers not blogers. There are critique groups on the forums that you can join that can help you perfect your piece.

Again this was a delightful read. I can't wait to see what an "old broad like you" will do with the topic spam. Keep writing, this is a great start!

Welcoem to Faithwriters! I like your thoughts about the your friend's blog and it is so true ... putting information out is putting yourself out there. Kind of like what we do with writing too.

I am new to Faithwriters too and felt just as anxious to join the challenge. The way you were introduced to blogging is typically the way people enter into the world of blogging.

I liked this piece, but careful with spelling. Bloger should be blogger.

Nicely done. I agree with some of the critiques from the previous commenters, but I also agree that this piece is short, sweet, shares your heart and is informative. Nice job!

Welcome to FW. I kinda liked the mention of FW in the 1st paragraph.

Someone asks, "What's Faith Witers? What's the Challenge?"

Types Faith Writers in the search bar and, voila, here they are.

Then I can read their new challenges too. Hooray!
