Have you ever paused, as you were staring at the sky on a clear night, and wondered about how expansive is the reach of stars? We see them as but twinkles, simple little flickers of light. But they really are so much more.

Each little flicker represents a massive ball of energy. To those close, they provide heat and light and even life. To those far away, they are just a sparkle of dim light. But that sparkle, when combined with other “sparkles” can create a robe of stars that can both comfort and inspire. So much is communicated when we think of stars. Stars shine bright. Their light goes out far from them.

We have many types of “stars” in our culture from movie stars to sports superstars. And we acknowledge these human stars for the same reason as the ones in the night sky. Even though they may be far away and distant, these stars create impact that can be felt and measured.

And yet, perhaps the greatest lesson we can draw from the stars is that they are doing simply … what they were created to do. They were created by God to shine! Stars don’t obsess about who is watching or about how they looked the night before. Stars aren’t preoccupied with being reviewed or evaluated. They just shine. And do so in the location where they are placed. Stars don’t moan or grumble about why they didn’t get a better solar system or say, “gee, why couldn’t I be over 20 planets? I only have 9.” They were created to shine their light. That is all they will ever be asked to do.

Jesus says “You are the light of the world …” (Matthew 5:14a – NKJV). Two verses later He encourages us by saying “let your light so shine … so that they may see.” There is so much we have in common with the stars in the sky. We too were created to shine!

First, we need to realize that we each possess a light deep inside. The Lord made it clear. YOU are the light of the world. That world may be a massive audience you face in your circle of influence every day. It could also be a small group of friends you have known for years. Whatever defines your world, you are a light to it. And your Creator has stated that your primary impact to it will begin with you letting the light inside you shine out from you.

But what if people don’t like my light? What if they don’t find my light interesting? What if they reject my light? Again, I don’t think the stars in the sky talk like this. Perhaps we need to follow their example. To simple shine our light and let the Lord use us, and at times many other stars, to create a portrait of lights across a dark world that can comfort and inspire.

Clouds can obscure the view of stars as well. As the Earth turns, we sometimes don’t see them for a while. And as it revolves around the sun, the actual stars we see are different during various seasons. No matter. Those same stars simply shine regardless of who is looking – or if anyone is. After all, that’s what they were created, to shine light. For us, our shining has a purpose also. We are called to shine so that those looking on can see it and glorify God.

So don’t hide your light. Don’t diminish or devalue the light God created in the person you are. Just follow the example of the stars we enjoy at night and shine for all to see!
