"The Bloomington School District has the outstanding achievement award for students who most improved their grade point average during their high school years. This is an incentive for students who are getting Ds and Fs to get As and Bs. The winner will also receive a plaque and a scholarship by the Bloomington Chamber Of Commerce. Mark Kramer please come forward to receive your award." The crowd burst out in applause.
When Mark arrived on stage the principal put his hand up to get the people to stop clapping. "Another reason Mark was chosen was because of his leadership skills with the Help for Haiti fund. Jefferson high school raised ten thousand dollars because of Mark’s efforts."
Mark face started to turn red as he went forward to the podium to speak. "I don't know what to say. I am deeply honored and humbled by this award. My mom was an alcoholic when I was in 10th grade. She died in a car accident because of he alcoholism. I also have had learning disabilities that made things even harder for me. The thing is I did not do it alone. I would not be here today if it were not for Jesus Christ my Lord. He helped me turn my life around. I also want to thank the Special Ed department and Ray Arco for all of his help. After all I have been through it is satisfying to win this award and to be called an outstanding achiever. I hope to use this scholarship to study counseling so that I can help other people as well. Thank you Chamber of Commerce."
As Mark walked away from the podium he cried as the crowd gave him a standing ovation.
