My friend Dyanne, who died of cancer, sent me a Maxine cartoon. Maxine is saying: “I’m thinking of sending my body to science. Even scientists can use a good laugh now and then.” Most of us have felt like Maxine at one time or another. The younger set might feel depressed over a bad hair day or a pimple at an inopportune time. In middle age, a few extra pounds around the midsection may be a cause for concern. However, the older we are, the more obvious it is to us that our mind and spirit dwell in a perishable shell, a mortal body. Eventually, we realize and accept that there is not much we can do to stop the process of decay.
This would be sad, except for God’s promise of a glorified body that will live through eternity in the presence of God. We are told in the Scriptures that our bodies are sown perishable, but will be raised imperishable. 1 Corinthians 15:43-44 says: “…it (our body) is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.” Even Maxine would agree, this is something to look forward to.
In the meantime, what does the Lord want us to do with our bodies? In Romans 12:1, we find the answer: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Our sacrifice now, entitles us to eternal life in a body that not only will not die, but will be like the body of the one who saved us: Jesus.
Dearest Heavenly Father,
Thank you for our bodies. Though temporary and perishable, they can be used in your service. Thank you for eyes to read and ears to hear your word. Those same eyes can see and hear a hurting world. Thank you for feet to go and hands to help and give. Thank you for a mind to understand and a heart to love. Thank you that when this body can no longer serve, you will give us a new and improved, glorified body that will love and worship you forever. Like the crowns we will lay before you in the end time, we present our bodies to you now to serve within our church walls and beyond.
In the name of the risen and glorified Jesus,
Amen
