He emulates every movement we make and he absorbs the entire environment with all of his senses. Everything he sees, he wants to experience. He lightly presses the tip of his tongue against everything to see if its taste is worth his time! Anything with some texture, his little hands must hold and feel; he closely listens with wide-eyed interest to any new and unusual sound.
His little legs which have only recently started to walk explore every corner, and anything that has a crevice or opening is an entrance to a new adventure. He sees us come down the stairs putting one foot in front of the other and, although the rise is taller than his legs are long, he struggles to come down the same way we do. He is always right behind his grandparents, learning – doing what we do.
The world nowadays and in his future will influence him to seek after anything pleasurable and self-fulfilling. It will inspire him to follow after the lusts of the heart as a means to success. He will be encouraged to continue a quest for self-indulgence and self-gratification through the very senses he now uses to learn.
The body is created to be the temple of the Spirit of God. It is his conduit for his own Body. It is a vessel he uses to spread his message of grace to the wounded and to the lost. It is a carrier to exemplify the Lord’s mercy, and an instrument for his word which provides comfort, strength and hope.
My grandson is only a year old now, but I want him to realize early in life why his body was created and what his purpose on this earth is. I want him to have effective tools to succeed in this life, for his own sake as well as on the behalf of others who may not know the Way.
The world can be mean. I want him to have confidence and courage, so his ears must be trained to listen for what will provide faith: “the mere sound of his name will signal hope… (Matt.12:21 MSG).”
When he dances and sings, or claps his hands, I want his motivation to be: “Applause, everyone. Bravo, bravissimo! Shout God-songs at the top of your lungs (Psalm 47:1 MSG)!”
Rather than being occupied by the sights and flavors of the world and the worldly, I want his desire to be to: “Open [his] mouth and taste, open [his] eyes and see - how good God is…” And wherever his little legs go for adventure, I want him to know early in life where to return for safety: “…Blessed are you who run to him (Psalm 34:8 MSG).”
Our grandson emulates every movement we make. He absorbs his environment with all of his senses. Although he doesn’t completely understand what I communicate to him with my mouth right now and he may never do as I say, he may continue to do as I do.
So as he watches, I must emulate Christ. I have to show him early why he was created, and from the beginning, demonstrate to him the foundation for success in life. So with every movement I make and at every opportunity, I must communicate to him with my whole body - this vessel, this conduit - to “Love God, your God, with your whole heart: love him with all that's in you, love him with all you've got (Deut. 6:5 MSG)!”
