With this thought, I sat down with my Bible and a brownie ( a bit too crusty on top for my taste) and studied from Hebrews. I felt strangely drawn to Ephesians also. When I was through studying, I prayed.
“Dear Heavenly Father, You know I adore you and give you praise. You know that I seek your,
I mean, I humbly seek your advice. There are things I need to say to Stephanie.
She needs, I don’t know what, but someone’s got to talk to her. Please let me
say the right things and, (sigh), in the right way. I ask this in Jesus’ name and I
thank you for your wisdom and guidance.
Amen.”
Having prayed, I felt ready to face the task. This was going to be so satisfying! I could call Steph of course, but a letter would suit my purposes better because - a.) it would reveal and be a record of my more correct viewpoint and b.) no one would be able to hear my voice shake.
I’ll start, “You opinionated squawking hen”.
What? In my mind I’m hearing that old line about “you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.” Hummm, strange ...
Let’s see - I want to make sure I tell her that her constant complaining and gossiping are distracting and inappropriate. She has a real problem with that.
What? There’s that voice in my mind again. I keep thinking of that verse I just read from Ephesians 4:29 “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.” - Anyway, back to the letter.
She drove me crazy misquoting scripture, I’m going to tell her about that! That verse from Hebrews 11:1 that she misquoted goes .......oh, I don’t remember it completely either. Well, I’ll look it up.
Oh, and of all the nerve, I’ve got to tell her that when I volunteer my time, I expect to be given a job worthy of my skills and intelligence! I’m not doing clean-up after the pet show fund raiser!
Well, how strange, I don’t know when I’ve ever remembered scripture so well before, but those other verses I read in Ephesians keep coming into my mind. “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children and walk in love just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.”
Too bad Steph isn’t hearing all of these verses in her head. You know, maybe I should just send her a really big Bible.
Yes, I know (oh, this small voice I keep hearing!) I know, she already has a Bible. So maybe she needs a big, colorful children’s Bible.
What? She needs caring guidance, not mockery and encouragement, not criticism?
Well, at least I’m going to tell her, her brownies aren’t all that great. (But isn’t it odd that suddenly I recall really enjoying her lemon bars?).
**********
Dear Steph,
You’ve been on my mind and in my prayers recently. I feel led to share
a few things with you. I’m so blessed to know you as a member of my church
family. And I’m so glad that we have a church family that tries to follow
teachings like Paul’s from Ephesians chapter 4, for example. Verses 25 - 29
are especially helpful, don’t you think?
I also loved the verse you shared the other day, Hebrews 11:1, wasn’t it?
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
I’m going to memorize that one, thanks for the idea.
I ‘m looking forward to the fund raiser. Also, I’d like to ask you if you’d consider coming to a Bible study group I’d like to have in my home. Maybe
we could begin by studying one of the Epistles. I hope you’ll be able to do this.
I’m excited about it!
In His love,
Stacy
P.S. May I be so bold as to ask if you’d bring a little something for refreshment
afterward? I have heard from a very reliable source that your lemon bars are just
divine!

I felt that the letter itself didn't live up to the promise of the first 2/3rds of this story.
This gave me a grin all the way through, and I hope to read many more of your stories!
