Why not?
“I don’t know how.”
Really?
“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.”
Are you sure?
“Well, no one’s shown me. Not exactly anyway.”
Do they have to?
“Well, yeah, I guess.”
Don’t you already have the manual?
“Well, aah, hum…”
Have you even looked at it?
“Kinda”
What does that mean?
“A little. I scanned it. Once.”
Uh hum
“I, I… I wasn’t sure where to start."
So you didn’t even try?
“I tried! Once. A while ago.”
For how long?
“I don’t know. A few times, I guess.”
Why did you quit?
“It wasn’t my thing.”
Oh, really?
“I didn’t get it. It was boring.”
So, since you ‘didn’t get it’, it didn’t satisfy you, you decided it was not worth your time and effort?
“Yea, well, I guess you could say that.”
Since when did it become about you?
“What do you mean?”
I thought the whole purpose was about Someone else – Something else, not about you?
“Yea, well, I suppose…well, yea, if you put it that way…”
But you made it about you, didn’t you?
“I thought that was what I was supposed to do!”
What made you think that?
“Well, because it’s supposed to help me, right?”
Help you? How?
“You know – grow, learn. That kind of stuff”
What kind of ‘stuff’?
“Be a better person. Don’t do bad things. Love my neighbor. Yadda, yadda, yadda.”
All that, huh?
“Yep.”
In one hour a week?
“Yea! And then there’s other times, too, if you want them.”
And just how much time did you spend each week. How much time did you ‘want them’?
“Um, not much, I guess. Probably none most of the time.”
Because it was boring.
“Yea!”
Your needs were not met.
“Yes..”
I’m sorry.
“You’re sorry? Why? You didn’t do anything wrong!”
I made it boring. I wasn’t exciting enough.
“No! You’re not boring!”
Then I didn’t teach you enough.
“No! You were great!”
Or help you grow enough.
“No! No! No! It’s not you!”
Then who?
“It’s me!”
Oh?
“Yes! I didn’t try! I thought it was all about me! I didn’t give you a chance!
Are you sure?
“Yes! Positive! It’s all my fault!”
Then what can I do to help now?
“Let me try again. Please!”
Try what?
“Please, will you meet with me again? This time I promise I’ll look for you. I’ll watch you. I’ll listen to you. Only you. Not me.”
Are you sure?
“Yes! Yes! Yes, I’m sure.”
Then I’ll be there. Looking for you. Waiting for you. Loving you.
I promise.
