What an unthinkable design we are too! We are made with a respiratory system and a vascular system that work in perfect harmony with each other. We breathe in and the lungs send oxygen into the bloodstream, which our vascular system carries to all the parts of our bodies to keep them healthy and living. We breathe out and toxins, such as CO2 among other things, are removed from our bodies.
I do not know if it applies to every detail of natural and spiritual life, but I do know it is applicable in many areas of life, that there are corollaries between the physical and the spiritual. The air we breathe is a necessary component for physical life, and the Holy Spirit of God is the necessary component for the life we live in the spiritual realm. It is note worthy that we who have received Jesus as our Savior, do live simultaneously in both the physical and spiritual realms while on this earth.
The Holy Spirit is spoken of in Scripture texts as being a “Wind,” or air with force of varying velocity. He is the spiritual air that we breathe. He fills us with the good things that keep life continuous while He expels the things that are toxic and destructive.
During those times when our lungs are impaired by dysfunction or disease, breathing is a chore, and the feeling of suffocation is realized, and the inability to move about with natural freedom is imposed upon us. It is also true that when our spirits are overcome by sin and the cares of the world, we feel suffocated or trapped, and hopeless to move about with desired freedom and fluidity.
The remedy for the healing of our physical lungs may take several forms, or perhaps a combination of forms, such as breathing treatments and exercises and maybe medication as well. The treatment for the healing of our spiritual breathing is to come to Jesus, the Great Physician, and by His Holy Spirit, confess the things we have allowed to attach to us that are cutting off our spiritual air.
I do not intend to communicate the idea that even in the physical, we are not healed by God. We can do nothing without Him. If we seek medical help, it is none the less God, Who ultimately heals us. But for the spirit of man, there is no assistance of medication or counseling, or exercise that we can do for acquiring the freedom to breathe freely, except that we come to God and by His Holy Spirit, we breathe in Heaven’s Holy Air and then find that we are pure, clean and effectively operational.
