Even with the world’s quick and easy email or texting, those messages written on various forms of paper are often priceless. Finding in your mailbox that square, white or pastel envelope immediately identifiable as a card is still a true joy. For a brief moment, you cease worrying about your daily cares and concentrate only on opening that unexpected communication. Who sent it? What does it say? You can see a barely perceptible, colorful image through the envelope’s translucent paper. What is it?
Your thoughts race - ‘Someone thought of me enough to send this.”
The images and designs are artistically created and the messages beautifully written.
What is most important though are the thoughts conveyed from the sender to the receiver.
A sweet teddy bear holding flowers and a heart tells a dear friend that ’I am here for you.”, a single red heart painted on a pure white background - “I love you.”, a brilliant, golden sunset over a purple sky - ‘I believe in you.’, a deep, blue sky meeting the ocean along the horizon - “ Even in this vast world, God is near.”, five, fuzzy, playful puppies perched in a wicker basket - ‘ We’ll be thinking of you!’
Then there are the unexpected notes slipped under a loved one’s pillow, in a child’s lunch box , or in a well-worn brief case that say - ’You can do it!”, or “I’m proud of you!’, or ’All of my love.’
A beloved Grandma sends her love in a card painted with smiling angels and includes her special recipe for dumplings written in her European script.
A friend who thought her anger was righteous sends an apology in a card decorated with bright orange and red flowers, her friends’s favorites.
Not machine generated, the beautifully written messages come from the heart that even the fastest high-speed computers couldn’t generate unless a writer supplied the special words of gratitude, admiration, and love.

I love getting cards in the mail, too. It's becoming a lost art.
I hope that we never lose the gift of a simple hand written card.
The reading of a good book, when snuggled up by the fireplace on a cold rainy day, could never be as special if done with a lap top. To embrace the book with the feel of each page between your fingers...oh, what joy!
