In Rugby, if a referee shows a yellow card, it is to indicate that one of the players has been officially cautioned. The player is sent to the penalty box, sometimes called the “sin bin” or “bad box”. The offending player sits in the “sin bin” a designated period of time and the team continues play without this team mate. This “sin bin” is for any offense not severe enough to require outright expulsion from the game.
When I make a bad decision in my life it is like that yellow flag in Football or the yellow card in Rugby. It slows my progress towards my goal of living correctly. It leaves me sitting in a “sin bin” as I deal with the sad consequences of that choice. I am cautioned by that sadness and compelled to correct the problems I’ve caused. Oftentimes this creates a waiting period before I can get back-in-the-game of my life. When I’m making bad decisions it also makes it harder on my friends and family who feel the weight of my separation while they stay faithful and in-the-game.
The “sin bin” has held me all too often in my life; so these days I’m more careful about how I choose to live. Now I don’t rush into things so much without thinking of the consequences of my choices. I take longer to make those more important decisions while contemplating possible outcomes and prayerfully asking for God’s wisdom and discernment.
Some of my life’s most important lessons have been born in the “sin bin”. I’ve gained more from my failures than from my successes. If it takes these yellow flags and caution cards to learn how to be a better player in this life, than I’m grateful for them.
Besides, I’m not quite ready for outright expulsion from this game.
