The Bible is like a vault, filled with great treasure. Encyclopedias, research books and the Internet serve as scratch pads in comparison! Will we accept the challenge and seek the adventure of treasure hunting; or will the pearl of great price go unclaimed?
It is being reported that writing is a lost art. Newspapers and magazines are going bankrupt and book sales decline. People want visual, video, digital media. They will never replace the comfort of snuggling up under a quilt with a favorite book on a rainy day. The Bible and scripture studies are available in many forms, reaching the changing population. I am grateful to those who develop new technology and art forms to keep the Word current, revealing its relevance in each and every generation.
Holding the inspired Word of God in my hands is a thrill and privilege! We can find answers to all our questions within the covers of the holy book divine. Continuing education is a current catch phrase; and I want to continue my process of study until God closes the book! One of my best tools is “The New Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance Of The Bible.” (Copyright 1990) It points me to scripture on subjects from A-Z. Like a good compass it always points me in the right direction!
My first Bible was white leather with my name engraved in gold on the cover. My mother purchased it with green stamps for a Christmas gift. I did not realize the value of the book and it remained boxed in my closet. It would be several years later before the young man who stole my heart would open my eyes to the wealth found in the Word. He introduced me to the Author!
I searched my concordance for Bible references on the word white. Let me share a few of the uses of the word:
White teeth
White hair
Miriam: Leprous, White as snow
White Linen
White of an egg
White garments, robes
Beloved: In Song of Solomon
White Wool
White: As Purity
White Horses
White Raiment: Jesus: Matthew 28:3
This is not a complete list; I hope it wets your appetite to check things yourself!
Our Lord Jesus created the heavens and earth along with the Father and Holy Spirit. He chose each color carefully to bring out the true value and beauty in His artwork. Color on the exterior would create interest in what lay inside. As women, do we apply makeup to cover up flaws or to highlight beauty within? If it is merely to hide blemishes our efforts may be in vain. People around us can see right through our masks. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like white-washed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness (Matthew 23:27 NKJ).” He did not sugar coat His message! He got to the heart of the matter; their hearts were blackened with sin and hypocrisy!
The Bible is a drama from introduction in Genesis, to intermission between the Old and New Testaments to the finale of Revelation! The curtain is going up in Act 3. Won’t you join me? The whitewashed tombs described in Matthew are contrasted by Jesus’ vivid description. “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it (Revelation 2:17 NKJ).” The Arlington National Cemetery rows of white crosses give us a sample of brilliance in white stones prepared for us! I wonder what the new name will be…
The Closing Scene is drawing near: “Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them (Revelation 20:11 NKJ).” We must get people prepared! “Behold I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest (John 4:35b NKJ)!”
