“Grandma, hurry up come look…” exclaimed Sally who was standing in front of a sunlit window pointing a delicate index finger at something she had discovered outside in the backyard.
As her grandmother entered the family room Sally couldn’t contain her excitement any longer. A quick hop followed by a jumping spree complimented with joyful squealing and rapid clapping of dainty hands. Sally’s red hair braided into pigtails and tied with emerald green ribbons flapped up and down as she continued to jump around the room with glee. Then as suddenly as her celebration began it ended with Sally’s excited proclamation, “This is the all time best day of my life!”
“My… mused her grandmother with a smothered chuckle, this must be a special day if it is the best day of your life.”
Sally grabbed her grandmother by one hand and pulled dragging her toward the family room’s picture window, “See Grandma right over there under that green bush with the big white flowers on it, do you see him?”
After a quick search in the direction Sally was pointing her grandmother nodded before responding, “Yes, I see him.”
“He is so little, where do you think his momma is demanded Sally?”
“Sally, I think his momma is somewhere nearby. Let’s watch for a few minutes.”
The sun was just coming up over the distant forest green hillside. Streams of sunlit rays glistened shimmering over the top of the green new birth canopy of trees. It was early spring and the genesis of life was clearly manifested from the sparkling reflection off dew laden lime green grass in their backyard to trees stretching up the hillside bursting with new buds and leaves.
Suddenly… a deer emerged from the thicket of trees next to their backyard. Standing perfectly still then raising and lowering its head seemingly sniffing the air. A few seconds later the beautiful cinnamon and buff colored deer stepped cautiously from the safety of the green forest into Sally’s yard.
“Is that his momma whispered Sally?”
“Yes dear, watch what happens next…her grandmother whispered back.”
The fawn Sally had discovered moments earlier stood stock-still like a statue framed perfectly by the green bush with the big white snowball flowers. His tiny head swiveled in the direction of the approaching adult deer. “He heard her coming, huh Grandma.”
Sally’s grandmother grinned and lightly kissed her on the forehead. They resumed watching the spring wildlife drama unfolding in their backyard. The little fawn’s tail suddenly began to flick rapidly back and forth. The adult deer continued to walk slowly toward the fawn reaching him then nuzzling his hind quarters. The fawn’s first steps were wobbly then they grew stronger as the tiny fawn ducked up under her belly bumping its’ head searching for something. “What’s he looking for Grandma?”
“Ssshhh…. You’ll see.”
“Oh, Sally’s head rocked back, he’s hungry!”
“Yes dear, that little guy isn’t very old and he wandered out in our yard by accident. I’m positive his momma was watching him making sure it was safe before she came to rescue him.”
They continued to watch the little fawn gulp down his breakfast. His front legs were spread apart like he was trying to do the splits and his tiny head bobbed and weaved as he nursed. Then the momma deer began walking toward the trees in the forest behind Sally’s yard. The tiny fawn followed his mother’s footsteps his dinky tail still wagging furiously back and forth. Sally craned her neck back and forth to keep them in sight as long as she could. Finally, the forest seemed to just swallow them up hiding from view the momma deer and fawn as they disappeared back into their forest home.
Sally turned to hug her grandmother. “Will they be alright asked Sally?”
“Yes… honey, God made the forest for them to live in. Those deer are happy living up there in the hills under all those green trees.”
