Geoffrey, a well-built handsome young man, twenty six, bubbling with life, occupying the least coveted designation in a bank as Development Officer which calls for intensive travel away from family, had just returned from Sri Lanka after an official trip,
He stood like a statue unaware of what had happened with no response to offer. His eyes blinked like a Barbie doll silently questioning thus, “Why are you pouncing upon me like a lion?”
The sky at office became black with clouds expecting a downpour. Everyone looked at the face of Geoffrey like a criminal about to be arrested. The storm that raged outside had no impact on Geoffrey a god-fearing man who was bold as a lion.
Even before he could open the sealed envelope, another statement darted like a poisoned arrow from the Senior Manager. “You seem to take things for granted. First of all, remember that this bank has hired you. Your whole being must work for its progress.” He kept erupting like the Vesuvius volcano throwing out hot molten larva in the form of words.
Geoffrey thought within, “Why is he beating around the bush? I haven’t understood head or tail of what he is trying to convey’, as he broke open the self addressed envelope. Like neon lights the words highlighted as ‘ENQUIRY’ emblazoned in orange color made things crystal clear to him. “Gosh! Another Katrina? Why am I always their target?”
Without moving his body, with his eyes fixed on the paper he read. “It has come to the notice of our organization, that you (Mr. Geoffrey) were assigned to conduct a developmental tour in Sri Lanka for bringing deposits from our customers there. However, we understand that instead of taking care to achieve the target set, you have been conducting religious meetings over there professing your faith in Christ and belief in offering prayers. We are in a quandary, not knowing the cause for your strange behavior during this trip. You are asked to explain in writing before the close of working hours today as to why this had happened. Otherwise, this act of yours would remain a black mark in your career.”
Quietly he placed the letter back on the desk. The Senior Manager showed signs of shock and surprise. “This fellow looks like a dead pan. No symptoms of fear or anxiety. What does he think of himself? What does his gesture convey? Given this frame of mind, what am I to understand and conclude from his behavior? Should I mark him black or white?”
Politely he told, “Geoffrey! This copy is yours.”
For which he responded, “Sir! I will take this letter from you towards the close of this day” and quickly moved towards his cabin.
Towards the end of the day, Geoffrey called his Senior Manager over telephone and said, “Sir! Can we discuss on the report?”
He answered, “Right away. Come over” and kept pondering as to what he should say.
Geoffrey entered the Senior Manager’s cabin with a few files and a brief case containing many important documents.
To begin with, Geoffrey told briefly about his official trip. Then he listed all the customers whom he had met and also told the names of those whom he personally visited taking initiatives to get a huge deposits for the bank. Then he highlighted the target figure projected exclusively for Sri Lanka and pointed out that the deposits which he brought were three times above the target set.
The moment Geoffrey brought this report before the Senior Manager, he apologized, “Mr. Geoffrey! I am very sorry for not having discussed in detail about the follow up of your trip. Having received false complaints from your peers, I was forced to take actions even without looking into the actual state of affairs. Please forgive me.”
Immediately he picked the enquiry letter, tore it and threw it into the trash bin. He shook hands saying, “Young man! I will recommend your promotion.” After a few moments, Geoffrey left the room. His peers were left wondering, “Why is he grinning? Has he not been dismissed from work?” Their minds corrupted with black clouds of jealousy, malice and hatred had lodged such false allegations. They never knew the havoc that such corrupt black clouds could cause. Whoever digs a pit will finally fall into it isn’t it? (Proverbs 26:27).
