Sally laughed and clapped her hands, “You go Blue, I am so proud of you.” Sally loved playing with her dachshund puppy named Blue. He jumped up and down on his stubby little legs then spun around trying to catch his tail. “Blue you are so funny,” said Sally.
Blue loved to play chase. Today, Sally had grabbed one of Princess the cats’ toys before she and Blue went out to play. She tied the little cat toy to a string. Sally let Blue see and sniff the toy. Then she put the toy on the ground and yanked on the string. The little toy jumped. Blue barked and jumped at the toy then sat down. Sally started running around the oak tree pulling the cat toy. Blue chased the little toy bumping and jumping right in front of his nose. Round and round the tree they chased. Finally, Blue gave up playing chase. Panting heavily he wobbled over to Sally whining and wagging his tail furiously. Sally giggled, “You want me to pick you up don’t you Blue. Well, okay.” Sally sat down and helped Blue climb into her lap so he could take a nap. Sally loved sitting here under her oak tree watching the puffy white clouds drift slowly across the big blue sky. Blue sighed heavily then fell asleep in Sally’s lap.
Boy oh boy… Blue must really be tired because he’s been asleep forever. Sally scratched under Blue’s chin to wake him up. “Blue. Blue. It’s time to get up. Aren’t you hungry Blue?” Puzzled there was no response, Sally shook Blue’s little puppy body and there was still no response. Realizing something might be wrong with Blue, Sally screamed, “Mom… something is the matter with Blue!”
Sally’s mother came charging out the patio door. “Sally, are you okay? Why are you screaming?”
“Mom, Sally lifted Blue’s lifeless little puppy body for her to inspect. “Blue won’t wake up!”
Sally’s mother gently took Blue from her daughter’s shaking hands. She tried to wake him. “Sally, go get in the car we’re taking Blue to the vet.
An hour later, Dr. Bentley came into the waiting room. He was dreading telling Blue’s family the news. Sally saw him first. Dr. Bentley how is Blue?
“I’m sorry Sally, Dr. Bentley said sadly, “Blue is dead.”
“What happened” asked Sally.
“Sally, Blue died because his heart was weak. It doesn’t happen very often but it does happen. I’ll take care of Blue for you.”
Sally mumbled “Thank you.” Sally sobbed all the way home. Between sobs she asked, “Mom, why did Blue have to die?”
Several hours later Sally laid curled up on her bed with her favorite teddy bear the one wearing the blue jacket. She had stayed in her room all afternoon and had even refused to eat supper.
“What do you think we should do dear?” Sally’s mother asked her father.
“Let’s go talk to Sally, said her father. She’s been up in her room long enough.”
Sally’s parents knocked softly on her bedroom door before entering her room. “Come on in, I’m not asleep.”
“How are you?” asked Sally’s father.
“Oh, daddy I am so sad and I am mad too!”
Sally’s father and mother sat down on her bed.
“I understand you feel sad honey, said her father. Why are you mad?”
“Well, God let Blue die. If God loves His children so much, how come he let Blue die?”
Sally’s father gathered her into his lap. Holding her close he said, “Sally, I know you feel sad and I can understand you feel mad. But Sally, God didn’t let Blue die.
“Well, then, who did” said Sally defiantly.
“Sally, her father said softly, have you ever been accused of something you didn’t do?”
“Sure daddy, what does that have to do with Blue?”
“Well, honey, God created earth and all the creatures in it. He created man in his own image. But Sally, God isn’t responsible for sin. God is perfect. When sin entered this world it separated man from God. Disease and sickness are part of life in a sinful world. Do you understand dear?”
Sally threw her arms around her father’s neck and squeezed real hard. “Sally, God knew that Blue had a weak heart and would not live very long. God knew you would love Blue. Blue was a thankful happy puppy his whole life thanks to you.
