My next “boyfriend” was in fifth grade. Joey would walk me to school every day. He was one of the sweetest boys I’ve known. He lived behind our house and he came over in the afternoons and my 4 siblings, other neighbors and Joey and I would play softball in our back yard. We had fun until he pitched the ball to my sister and she swung and hit the ball into his stomach, thereby knocking the breath out of him! Ouch! But he forgave and we kept playing! His mom would invite us over to swim in their pool from time to time. I was introduced to the combination of pretzels and cola. Oh my goodness what a wonderful snack that was! Joey was so gentle and patient with us, with me. Joey was a different kind of person than the rest of the world. He never teased anyone, he never was angry, just sweet-natured in every way.
In sixth grade there was handsome Johnny. He made my heart skip a beat. He ended up being a little unkind. I just wish Joey hadn’t moved away.
Love is so precious when you’re young. You don’t realize it at the time but it’s so pure and honest. Scottie loved me. Yet as pure and honest as it is it’s still tainted with our background and our religion. He had to marry Natalie. How can things be so complicated when you’re just a kid? Although, he was right in his choice. He was taught well. Our backgrounds would have been different, we would have worshiped God in two separate ways, we would have wanted to raise our kids in two separate ways. It would have been a difficult go had he grown up to marry me.
Then Johnny was the angel of light. Handsome but empty. I’m glad I found that out when I was young. Hopefully he found out too.
Christ’s love is pure and uncomplicated, more like Joey’s. He takes us the way we are and loves us. He gave everything He was to be with us…we did more to Jesus than knock the breath out of Him. Still, He loves us. He’s patient and kind and gentle as He tries to help us grow in Him. Jesus is even more than Joey was to me. He is a shoulder to cry on, a joy-giver, a confidant, the most intimate of friends and a wise counselor. A Love could not be more pure and precious.
