The memories of all the fun times, laughter and tears we shared flooded my mind all at once. We were best friends all through high school. We could always talk to each other about anything.
All the good times came to an end the summer after graduation. She moved away to college and I stayed behind to attend a local college. The years seemed to fly by and before we knew it we had lost touch with each other.
I was pleasantly surprised to hear from her the day she called. We began to reminisce about old times when we were growing up. “Those were the good ole days” she exclaimed.
When she suddenly blurted out the reason for her call, I was stunned. She said she and her husband were having a lot of marital problems and she felt like she needed to get away for a few days. She wondered if I would mind if she and her two children came to stay with me.
My heart ached for her and I really wanted to help her. So, even though I wasn’t sure if it was the best thing to do I told her to get her children ready and come on over.
A few hours later we were sitting at the table in my kitchen talking over a cup of coffee. “Thank you for letting me come, Claire, I really appreciate this” she said, with tears threatening to spill down her face.
“You’re always welcome, Lori, You know that” I reassured her.
“I don’t know how things got so bad” she sighed sadly, “We just can’t seem to stop arguing long enough to work things out.”
“I’m so sorry” I said softly. “Would you like me to pray with you?”
She looked at me and smiled appreciatively, “I’d like that; I haven’t prayed in a long time. We haven’t been to church in awhile.”
I patted her hand and then we bowed our heads in prayer.
She seemed to be more at peace after we prayed. “I don’t know what will happen next but I feel so much better and I am definitely getting back in church” she said, with resolve.
As we were getting the children ready for bed, my doorbell rang. Lori’s husband Mitch was standing there shifting nervously from one foot to the other. “I- I was hoping to talk to Lori” he stammered sheepishly.
“Sure” I said. “Have a seat; I’ll go get her.”
A few minutes later Lori came into the bedroom where I sat with the children. “Claire, I don’t know how it happened but Mitch and I actually sat down and talked without arguing. He wants us to start counseling.”
“That’s great” I said, “I knew God would bring something good out of this bad situation for you!”
“You’re absolutely right and that’s not all . . . ” She looked at me, giddied with joy, “He said he had been praying too and he wants us to get back in church.”
“ Well, isn’t God Awesome?” I asked, rejoicing with her.
“Yes; He turned a day of sadness into a day of joyful reunions” she remarked happily.
