“We will retain all employees and provide a cost of living increase,” said Angela.
“Is this some sort of 'Christian thing' that you do when you take over a company?” asked Roger Clemons, the CEO. “I see that cross embedded in the Verilli Technology Corporate logo.”
“No, this is more of a 'stop the senseless greed thing',” replied Angela. “This is a technology company, we should be productively innovative.”
“But we need to take bold actions to ensure profits and shareholder value,” replied Roger.
“I don't think laying off some workers and then freezing the salaries of those workers in the bottom of the company's salary scale in order to boost profits to then boost your bonus which will be taken back out of profits, actually constitutes a bold nor innovative strategy,” said Angela, sternly.
“I don't have to take this treatment,” said Roger. “I'll resign if you insist on keeping all these employees and giving them raises.”
“Good,” replied Angela. “That saves me the trouble of firing you. Have your belongings out of this office by 2:00 PM today.”
“You wouldn't dare,” said Roger.
“I just did,” said Angela. “I'll contact security personally to make sure you leave.”
Angela walked out of Roger's former office and went straight to his former secretary.
“Mr. Clemons is no longer employed by this company,” said Angela. “See to it that everyone in the company is informed as soon as possible. Mr. Clemons is to be out of his office by 2:00 PM today. I'll personally contact the head of security to arrange for guards for you while he vacates. Afterwards, I'll be in the executive conference room reviewing research and development plans if anyone needs me.”
“Yes, Mrs. Verilli,” replied the secretary with a smile.
Angela Verilli took the elevator to the floor of the main security office.
“Johnson,” said Angela.
“Yes, Mrs. Verilli,” replied Security chief Samuel Johnson.
“Roger Clemons is no longer employed by this company, see to it that he vacates his former office by 2:00 PM today. His security clearances are immediately revoked. He is to turn in all access systems immediately. All access codes that he had official knowledge of are to be changed. Also have two security guards personally escort him out of the building. His former secretary should have an additional two guards by his office near her desk until he leaves.”
“Yes, Ma'am,” replied security chief Johnson with a smile. “I've some overzealous new employees who don't even think of Clemons as a boss. I'll assign all five of them. That is if you don't mind.”
“That sounds like a good idea,” said Angela. “I'll be in the executive conference room if you need me.” Then Angela paused, “Why are you smiling so much?”
“Well, most people here remember Clemons as the guy who promised big turnarounds to get appointed CEO but all he did was lay people off, year after year. Heck, my 8 year old daughter could've done that. Then you took over the company. Everything changed for the better. Mrs. Verilli, you're like our guardian angel.”
“Why thank you, you're too kind,” replied Angela.
When Angela entered the conference room, Alex was holding a plate of chocolate desserts. She smiled. He always had a way of doing little things to brighten her day.
“To what do I owe the occasion?” asked Angela as Alex gave her a kiss on the cheek.
“You're in Forbes magazine, again,” said Alex. “Most people in this country are praising you for cutting executive excess and improving the workers' compensation every time you take over a company.”
“This United States was unfortunately built on the exploitation of African slaves and the near genocide of Native Americans,” said Angela as she sat down in front of a computer with stacks of paper next to it. “This morbid destructive greed is just plain wrong. It's about time this nation started doing what people have claimed for hundreds of years: make life better for everyone regardless of income or race.”
“I knew I didn't just marry you for your good looks,” said Alex.
