For beauty, wealth and fame.
I dare not try to keep the pace
Of such a foolish game.
The quest for beauty is but vain...
'Tis only deep as skin.
With passing time it surely wanes,
Leaving emptiness deep within.
Men labor for possessions and wealth,
The seductive American dream!
They sacrifice family, friends and health--
A nightmare now it seems!
And loneliness dwells on the mountaintop
With the man who's captured fame.
Yet, he lives in fear for he cannot stop
The rise of another's acclaim.
This ancient game has many names,
Pride and Lust to name a few.
Each eager player takes his aim,
"I can, I shall, I do!"
Solomon ran a similar race,
Sought pleasure, toil and gold,
To show such as a worthless chase...
His story in Scripture is told.
For all that his hungry eyes beheld,
All that his heart desired,
Every pleasure--nothing withheld--
Was pursued, experienced, acquired.
"Meaningless! Meaningless! Utterly meaningless!"
His cry when the race was o'er.
He, like others, found emptiness;
Surely there must be more!
He reached a conclusion from this noble quest,
Gleaned wisdom that set his mind to rest...
"Fear God and keep His commandments,
For this is the whole duty of man."
Meaningless! Meaningless! Utterly meaningless!
Ecclesiastes 1:2 NIV
...Fear God and keep His commandments,
for this is the whole duty of man.
Ecclesiastes 12:13 NIV
