Previous Challenge Entry (Level 1 – Beginner)
Topic: Bridge (07/31/08)
A silvery-white mist rose up from the gorge where Faith stood. “I can’t see the bridge anywhere!” Frustration settled in around her penetrating her once calm resolve. When she talked with Promise-keeper, there was no doubt at all that she could make it across to where Blessing waited.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Intimidation sneered.

“I’m going over there,” Faith was beginning to wonder if she really believed it herself.

“There’s no way!” He laughed. “You haven’t got the right tools, and there’s no bridge.”

Faith knew Intimidation wasn’t lying. It appeared to be true; she had no gear for mountain climbing. She could see no bridge. She closed her eyes as she remembered her conversation with Promise-keeper earlier that day. “I will meet you there,” He said. “You can trust Me; I will give you everything you need to get to Blessing.”

“I will trust You, Promise-keeper,” she committed.

“What are you waiting for? Are you afraid?” Intimidation interrupted Faith’s train of thought; taunting her. “Hey Mocker, come over here. We’ve got another one!” They joined together with one purpose, to keep Faith from reaching Blessing. Panic began to rise in her throat as they blocked her path.

“I will be with you always,” she heard a whisper in her ear. Quickly, she turned to see who was speaking, finding no one there but the scrawny leafless tree a few yards away. She was hopelessly alone.

“Maybe they are right,” her mind began to spin. “Maybe I don’t have what it takes.” Self-pity chimed in with Mocker and Intimidation; his voice sounding much like Faith’s own.

“Faith, don’t forget…Blessing is waiting and so is Promise-keeper.” There was that whisper again. This time, when Faith turned, Love and Truth were sharing a space under that weak looking tree. They drew her into their embrace then poured her a cool cup of encouragement from the water cooler they carried on their back.

“Yes, but they are on the other side of this gorge, and there is no way to cross,” Faith lamented.

“It’s true; there is no visible way to cross.” Truth seemed to agree with Faith. “Remember you must ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.’ ” (Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV)

“Promise-keeper told me the same thing, it’s just so hard. I’m all alone out here.” Her mind began to clear. “Wow, this drink is great, may I have more?”

Love smiled, “Sure, drink until you are satisfied, but you are not alone. Remember the promise? ‘I am with you always, even to the end of the age’? (Matthew 28:20NKJV) It’s almost time to cross.” They must have talked for hours until Faith’s heart and mind were once again confident in Promise-keeper’s faithfulness.

“Will you go with me? With you, I feel so safe.”

“Of course we will.”

Just then, Faith looked into the distance and shouted, “I see the bridge!” as she took off running for Blessing, who was waiting on the other side. In her haste to reach the bridge, Faith did not notice Intimidation standing at the entrance to the bridge. She collided with him nearly knocking him off the cliff.

“Hello there Faith,” said Intimidation once he regained his balance. “I hope you’re not thinking of walking this bridge. The way is long and narrow you might fall. I am only thinking of your safety. Look at the bridge; it those planks are tied together with just a little rope. It certainly is a long way down, don’t you think?”

“Maybe you’re right, but I’ve got to try. Promise-keeper is at the other end waiting for me with Blessing. He said I can make it. It will just take some discipline and renewing of my mind.” Faith’s confidence regained, knowing Truth and Love were there to help her cross.

Truth grabbed Faith’s hand as they started on the bridge, “Be sure to ask for a drink of encouragement whenever you are thirsty.”

Love agreed, and the three of them set out across the bridge, certain that together they would safely make the journey.

An allegory! It reminds me a lot of "Pilgrim's Progress" or "Hind's Feet in High Places." I like your names.

What an awesome take on the subject Helen and you pulled it off very well! Good job with dialogue, atmosphere and message. You go girl!

I saw your querie on "Throw A Brick." I am sure you do not have to be a club 500 to post a link. Marlene has just helped me do it. So I am passing on the information she gave me. (After my comment on your story).

As for your story, it was very good. You must have at one time in your life read "Pilgim's Progress." This little allegory sounded like a modern version of that. If you want to know more about Pilgrim's Progress, and how you can read it on line, write me....Oh, and by the way, what are you doing in Beginners category? This story, in my opinion, tells me you should be away past "Beginners"...Helen

This is far better than your placement indicates. You have a real flare for imaginative pieces. This one would make a good children's book for mid-school ages. Sort of a prep for Pilgrim's Progress.
