Later I sat pondering, “Memories, memories, memories…”
I thought about my own memories, and how they had fashioned my faith. I thought of all the things that made our memories: experiences, choices, learning, joys, and grief. Suddenly I was aware that memory fashioned us into the people we have become.
Memories are like the fingers of large, invisible hands molding a jar of clay; yet the quality of the clay plays a part in the beauty of the vessel as it lends to, or resists the touch of that master hand.
Someone said, “Clothes make a man.”
Yet today I thought, “Actually memories are what make us what we are.”
Memories bring happiness, satisfaction, friendliness, bitterness, sorrow, hatred, and many of the emotions that express the nature developing within us—I’m sure you’re seeing the picture.
Memories are matters of the heart, and Jesus said, “It is from the heart the mouth speaks; and out of the heart flows forth adultery, murder… all kinds of things: the issues of life.”
No wonder Paul encourages us to think on the good things, it’s like choosing your memories. Can we do that? Is it possible that memories don’t have to be made up of all our past experiences?
Many of the stories breathed onto the pages here speak of such choices—and the changing of choices. It’s a part of what the new birth is all about.
Did you know that God chooses his memories? Every time we sin it’s like a slap in the face to God: a spear in his side—thrust all the way to his heart. Yet, if we repent and ask for forgiveness through the blood of Jesus he chooses not to remember them.
Through that same sacrifice of Jesus he promises to heal your hurtful memories—to help you choose what you remember, and how you remember it. He promises, “I will wipe every tear from your eye.”
Bring your memories to Christ and let him make a brand new you—a happier and more contented you. Can you see your memories brightening?
Every Memory will be sweet
When I sit at Jesus feet.
Every scar in this earthly clod
Can be smoothed by the hand of God.
Yes, my past I cannot change,
Till new life, through him, I gain.
Ah, the bitter becomes so sweet,
Washed with tears poured on his feet.
All the hurts becomes so fair,
As I wipe them with my hair.
Now I know in earth and heaven
All my sins have been forgiven.
All the pains within my past
A wretched life for me had cast.
Now in his hands he holds them fast;
And this new life? What a blast!
Happy are the memories of those who have committed them to Christ.
