I had been watching some program in a regional channel lost in past reveries, when my Angel Tobias pulled my saree with a light with a peculiar mumbling and sniff!
Recovering from my dreams, I looked at the clock. It was 8 pm. I couldn’t make sure if the clock had struck to announce the time. My husband was reading something in the next room. Tobias ran to him and pulled him also. Yes, it was time for our night prayers!
Tobias, our pet dog, never failed to remind us our duties with a greater time conscience! He did everything promptly, from carrying the newspaper in the morning till he met everybody at home saying goodnight by wagging his tail and laid his head for his rest under my cot. I had named him Tobias on the day of his arrival which reminded me the dog mentioned in Tobit in the Holy Bible(Tobit 6:2). My brother brought him to our house to give company to my son Joshi who was just two years old. From that day he had been the little brother of my son Joshi in everything.
Even now our memories of Tobias would rush to the gate at the horn sounds of buses in the mornings and evenings, though my son is in the college now! The school bus used to take Joshi around 8 am and back home around 4 pm everyday as long as he was studying in the local schools.
One day when the bus was late, Tobias became restless, barking and making all kinds of peculiar noises, walking repeatedly to Joshi’s room and gate till my son arrived! When Joshi went to college he understood well that his brother had gone for better studies and he couldn’t expect him at those regular times!
I have always been wondering at Tobias’ obviously understanding time!
An incident that occurred when Joshi was five or six still makes me smile with an amusing memory!
Taking Tobias for a walk was rather like having a tiger by the tail! So I showed my son and my nephew who also accompanied us that day how to slow Tobias by giving his leash a firm yank and commanding “Run!” A short time afterwards, as I was rushing them along the busy main street, I was taken aback when the two boys gave my hands a firm yank, and shouted: “Run Mommy, Run!” The traffic came to a standstill with our amusing drama!
Tobias had been part and parcel of our life. He grew with my son in everything. As my son grew up in age his plays with Tobias also grew up! Both of them spent the evenings in playing ball rolling on the meadow in front of our house. Without one the other couldn’t eat anything! Both shared the same bed! When my son Joshi was bleeding with some injury, it pained Tobias who looked up at him and wept!
Tobias knew well all our people. He was sure of our every movement and sound! As given in the gospel, Tobias heard our voice and we heard him! (John 10:2-4). For us he was not a mere dog, but a member of our family, taking part in all our sufferings and joys! He helped us even in our spiritual life by making us aware of our prayers in time and accompanying Joshi to church, etc!
For us Tobias had been the little lamb of the poor man in 2 Samuel. Like that lamb of Nathan Tobias grew up with us; he used to eat of our meager fare; and drink from our cup, and lie in our bosom, and he was a son to us! (2 Samuel 12: 2-3)
When we lost our Angel last year due to some kidney problem, our hearts were torn! Tears couldn’t alleviate our sorrows!
And now, we are living just in the memories of Our Family Angel still living in our hearts!

The sequence is a bit mixed, but this was interesting.
Well done.
