FUN IN THE SUN
What a beautiful autumn day. The sun was shining brightly, there was not a cloud in the sky and little or no wind. Johnny and Billy had decided they would take their bikes and ride to the farm about ten miles away where the farmer grew lovely pineapples. It was just the day for such things. Johnny was eight and Billy just four but at this young age they still did some things together, like building a canoe from corrugated iron (an old tin sheet) and canoeing down the local river. This meant more time was spent emptying the boat than sailing, but it was fun.
Mother spoiled their plans today; she had different ideas and had placed their new baby brother on the verandah to catch some sun. He just lay there on a beautiful white blanket gurgling away and they had strict instructions to ‘keep an eye on him. How boring for two active little boys.
Mother said that she would make some special biscuits for them if they did, poor consolation even though mother’s biscuits were always special.
Suddenly they had a plan. The verandah was of highly polished red concrete and very smooth. They could take Bobby, their new baby brother on his blanket up and down like he was in a sleigh. What fun as Bobby glided up and down behind them so gracefully.
Now something more exciting; when they let go of the blanket it glided freely on its own for a distance. Now they took turns to see who could make it glide furthest. Billy’s turn - he ran as fast as his little legs could carry him and with his very best effort sent Bobby sailing along the verandah at great speed, Whee! Then suddenly, thump! Bobby’s little head hit the sharp brick corner of the roof support column hard.
Horrors! There seemed to be a dent in his little skull and blood flowed rather freely from the extremity. Panic struck the brothers, without hesitation they both ran from the impending doom that would be theirs once Father knew. As they ran Johnny reminded Billy, “You did it”
“I know,” he replied his voice trembling with fear.
Suddenly a new thought struck him. What if Bobby died before his parents found out? He stopped, hesitated, trying to decide what he should do? Now he turned back running to get help for his baby brother. He arrived at the verandah just as mother scooped the baby into her arms with a brief prayer.
“I did it, Mom,” he blurted out through his tears.
“Go to your room, Billy, we’ll talk about it later,” Mother ordered, and off he went,
It was 1940 and the family did not own a car so Father called the ambulance and the Doctor. They both arrived simultaneously and after a brief examination Bobby was taken to hospital for observation.
Billy lay on his bed with his face buried in the pillow, sobbing his little heart out. In the darkness of his pillow he saw Bobby’s head gashed open and bleeding and prayed.
“God! Mommy told me that Bobby was a gift from you. I don’t care whether it was a stork or an angel that brought him, I’m sorry I didn’t treat him right. Please send Mommy another one. I won’t do it again.”
Well, Bobby was not as badly hurt as was first thought and everything was all right, so Mother went to talk to Billy.
“It was all my fault,” he said, “Johnny wasn’t even there,” he began to say and was told.
“You don’t have to lie, I know what really happened Johnny told me and you were both very naughty. But everything will be alright and we feel you have both learned your lessons, so come and have some tea and biscuits.”
It was lovely sitting in Father’s rose lawn with Bobby on his clean white blanket on the verandah. Billy announced, “We’re still a whole family.”
