Previous Challenge Entry (Level 1 – Beginner)
Topic: Mother (as in maternal parent) (04/24/08)
I was preparing dinner in the kitchen and had my back turned when my four year old son, proudly announced, “Mommy…look what I found!” I quickly jumped around to see his new treasure. Many times that phrase was followed by some terrible surprise. A cricket or a spider; I expected something along those lines.

Shawn stood in the middle of the kitchen floor, struggling to keep a baby in his arms! His sandy brown curls framed his joyful face and his green eyes gleamed with delight. “Mommy…I got my wish! I found a baby sister!” He exclaimed with the pure happiness of a youngster’s discovery.

“Shawn! WHERE DID YOU GET THAT BABY?!” The panic caused my voice to crack and the words came out like desperate pleas for help. The beautiful blonde haired girl was not hurt or the least bit upset. She held Shawn’s hand tightly and looked up at him proudly. Not more than a fourteen or fifteen months; no way to ask her where she came from.

Shawn could read that I wasn’t as excited about his new discovery as he had hoped. “Mommy…what’s wrong?” His little voice so innocent and his face filled with concern.

“Oh no, Baby! We CAN’T keep her!” I bent down to get a closer look at the child my sweet boy had brought home to stay. She didn’t look familiar to me. I had no idea where she had come from. Trying to calm my own nerves and mask sheer terror racing through my mind, I tried calmly to get information from my child who had already become upset by my initial reaction. “Sweetie, where did you find her? We have to take her back.”

“No!” He replied defiantly. “I want to keep her!” He changed to pleading. “I can take care of her! Please Mommy!” Obviously, he was reasoning in his mind that he was going to convince me to keep her.

“Honey, we can’t keep her. She already has a Mommy…I bet her mommy is crying right now because she lost her!”

His face turned solemn as he dropped his head. He hadn’t realized he would be hurting someone by keeping his new found sister. “You think her mommy is crying?” His sweet little face was full of compassion.

“I am sure her mommy is crying right now….where did you find her? Her mommy is going to be so happy you kept her safe!” I could feel the mood shifting…he was proud to be the hero of the day.

“Come on! I’ll show you!” He struggled to pick up the baby again. “Can I hold her?” I asked encouragingly. He smiled and I picked her up and placed her on my hip as we walked through the garage door to the alley.

“Down there!” He pointed toward the main street and smiled with pride.

At that very moment, a frantic woman rounded corner with tears streaming down her face. She immediately saw me standing in the alley with her little girl on my hip and my son pointing her direction.

“Oh Thank God!” She cried as she ran up to me and looked over her little girl.

“Were you crying because you lost your little girl?” Shawn sweetly asked.

“Yes!” The woman answered as I handed her the child.

“I found her and took good care of her! I didn’t let her get in the street or anything!” He beamed while recounting his valiant rescue.

“Thank You!” The mommy acknowledged as she wiped the tears from her eyes.

With a thankful smile and a new glow of relief the mommy said. “Thank you so much. I’m sorry! I just turned away for a moment and she was gone!”

I quickly corrected her. “No, don’t thank me. It was Shawn that brought her to safety out of the street.” Lovingly, I grabbed Shawn’s hand to make sure he was alright. He was fine and happy to be of service.

“Young man, thank God for you! You are a hero! She might have been hurt if it were not for you! Thank you very much!” She shook his little hand and walked back down the alley smiling. The baby smiled and waved at Shawn as her mother carried her away.

Shawn was pleased he had saved a little girl from peril. Not only did he get an early lesson on taking care of others, we ate chocolate cake for desert to celebrate the hero in our house.

Cute! I liked Shawn's innocence, especially with finding a baby sister and 'wanting to keep her'. That made me smile, I could see a few more adventures ahead for him! Nicely done! ^_^

This is a very sweet, encouraging story! It had the perfect ending: eating a slice of chocolate cake. Yum! Keep writing! ^-^

The mother did right in turning her son's fear for doing a wrong thing, to becoming a heroic act! Here's a lesson worth teaching the young. Thanks for sharing! A good story.

Oh, I really liked this. Good writing! A situation many of us as parents can relate to. I liked the ending and how the little boy's mommy handled the situation. Keep up the writing. God bless. Janice

What an amazing story! Is it a true story? Your son's innocence did shine through. As mothers, every moment can become a teaching moment. And this one was no exception. Good job. It kept me interested from beginning to it chocolatey end.

"I found a baby sister". Oh, if only it were that easy. Bless his little heart. Turning him into a hero in his eyes was a great thing to do. Nice story, which I enjoyed very much. Well done.
