Tin roof to match stood tall and weathered to the eye. Mable placed
large beds of flowers around the yard and along the sidewalk. There
Were roses in every color cascading over her trellis walkways
entering the yard and over her patio. Miss Mable was always sitting
under the roses on her patio during the summer. It is late in the
season now she has retreated into her house where it’s warm and
comfortable. Soft shadows seem to float across the floor as the sun
retreats. The sun will set early as winter replaces summer.
Miss Mable retrieved her wire-framed glasses. She placed them
slightly down on her nose to ensure being able to see to finish her
mending. Turning on the lamp she was now ready. As she was
picking up her mending she felt a chill. Putting her mending aside
she pulled herself up. Her lean body slightly bent over seemed to
glide across the floor. Opening the wood box grasping a couple of
small logs she placed them in the fireplace. After lighting the fire she
went to the clothes tree in the front entry hall. Taking a faded old blue
sweater and warping it around her shoulders. A warm feeling
encompassed her. Her mom's sweater was all she had now.
Returning to her chair she looked at the fire. The amber tiles reflect
a warm inviting glow around the room.
Miss Mable was born here. After her mother passed away she
Put all her time and energy into teaching. Remembering now the
years past she felt happy and grateful to have so many children.
Each year on her birthday she would receive a big stack of cards.
All of her students loved and admired her. She was the most loving
and giving teacher they ever had. There always seemed to be time
For anyone in need of her help. She felt giving was a way of
Returning some of the wonderful love and kindness she had
Received from her mother and grandparents during her youth.
She stood tall and lean with Her soft gray hair pulled back to form
a neat little bun on the back of her head. the soft waves framed her
face in silver.
Miss Mable sat mending in front of the fire. She finished the
pillowcase. Holding it up to check making sure the stitches were
as they should look. Her mother taught her and she didn't like the
idea of it being wrong. Folding it neatly she placed it on the pile to
be pressed and put away. She was putting her thread away in
he sewing box. Something was stuck in the way. She pulled and
This faded envelope came out. It was her mother's handwriting
Miss Mable startled to see it hesitated for a minute. As she reached
in and pulled the card out memories came flooding back. This was
the last birthday card her mother gave her. The tall trim lady
did everything for Mable. They were very close. They could have
been sisters they were so much alike. Mables mom was left to raise
her. It was common knowledge Mable an only child was loved and
protected as much as possible.
Miss Mable felt tears in the corner of her eyes. She pulled
Herself up and went to the hall cabinet. After going through the
albums she found the one with the cards her mom sent her. Opening
the album she went to the page with all the birthday cards her mom
had sent The last years of her life. As she went through she
discovered this was to be given to her last year.
The love and kindness given to her was a precious memory she
would cherish always.
