What she was about to do was not unfamiliar. She had done this many times before, always in the safety of her home. In her secret place, she was with her Beloved. Today her Beloved would say to her “Rise my love,” and today she rose.
All eyes were upon Emily, and there was silence. The butterflies now turned into queasiness. Her eyes glanced the congregation, viewing the many expressions of the members. She found Momma Bea, sitting in the sixth pew off the far right. Momma Bea, as she is affectionately called is the mother of the young women. Her maturity and wisdom draw women of all ages to her. Momma Bea’s love and whit with words radiate faith hope and love to the discouraged.
Momma Bea gave Emily that look and smile that she has seen many times before. The look of a proud mother. The smile of approval. The love of the Lord. This look and gestures were opposite to her upbringing, and rejected anyone coming near her. Nevertheless, something inside Momma Bea would draw Emily closer to her. It was her warmth, a gentle look, a quick encouragement, and Momma Bea would draw Emily in with her love and patience.
Emily closed her eyes. Peace overwhelmed her and there He was, her Beloved.
Emily sang.
The voice of my beloved
Behold, He comes
He spoke and said to me and says to you
Rise up my love, my fair one
My church I call you to rise up
For lo the winter is past
And the flowers appear on the earth
Rise up m love, my fair one
My bride I call you to rise up
Emily finished the song her Beloved whispered in her ears. Her beautiful voice was hidden beneath the rubble. The rubble that her Beloved removed, along with the help of Momma Bea.
As she gently opened her eyes, she could not believe what she saw. Members of the congregation prostrate before the Lord. Others raising their hands in complete surrender.
Emily had taken her first step. She looked at Momma Bea, her serviette covering her eyes. Emily was encouraged by the love and support of Momma Bea.
Today is a new day; the flowers appear on the earth.
