She was yelling about her papers being out of order and saying it was his fault. Admittedly, he had been drawing on some papers when she entered to the room. He hadn’t meant any harm. He liked to sit at Mother’s desk and pretend to be a busy grownup like her. He guessed that she wouldn’t allow him to sit at her desk anymore.
Mother rarely hit but she shouted often, and loudly. She always seemed too busy and too angry. He had learned long ago to stay close but out of her way. He thought that’s what he was doing by quietly drawing on the papers. That way, he could be near Mother but not bothering her.
Now, he had done the inexcusable. Instead of pleasing Mother, he had made her angry again. He knew he was a very bad boy. Mother told him that often enough. He nervously tried to pick up the untidy papers so he could be a good boy again. Mother ripped the papers out of his hands, still yelling at him. He wasn’t grasping all that she said. He had heard most of it before. Her shouting always frightened him beyond comprehension of the words spoken. He didn’t know what to do next.
He wanted very much to be a good boy and please Mother. Sometimes, when he brought her a drink of water or a cookie while she worked, she smiled and told him he was a good boy. He liked to hear that. He wanted to be a good boy more than anything. He determined that, after the yelling stopped this time, he would try even harder to please Mother. He would quietly get her a cookie and that would make her feel better. Then he would never draw pictures on her papers again.
Note: Let’s always love those little people placed in our care with lots of patience and kindness!
