I stood holding my Mother's hand as she sighed her last breath, and felt an enormously painful sting in the depth of my heart that told me I had lost something more dear to me than I had ever realized. I laid myself upon her chest, feeling nothing, hearing nothing, and slowly closed my eyes in despair knowing my world had changed forever. Wishing it were but a nightmare, I rose softly, quietly, and stood back ,looking up on her great beauty as she lay fast asleep. I gazed at the dryness of her hands and accepted the cold, hard fact she would never clasp my hand again, in hers. I gently swept her graying course hair from her brow, remembering how she would so lovingly stroke my hair as a child when I was ill. I felt the softness of her face as I touched her cheek with mine, and wished for a moment I could just feel a warm tear fall from her face, rolling ever so gracefully upon my own. Gasping for a breath before leaving her alone in the dark, dreary room, I turned around for a last glimpse, of the Mother I knew, that had become the closest friend I would ever know, and the farthest expression of human love I would ever endure being without.
