I’m pretty sure it was Little Richard who once said this, and, good golly, Miss Molly, that caveat works for me!
In essence, it says, forgive me if I seem boastful, but I have solemnly reached the conclusion that there’s no denying this fortunate thing that has been bestowed upon little old moi.
And so, while humility and modesty are welcome virtues, sometimes a healthy, confident self-pat on the back is needed and well-deserved, particularly when we are convinced that our awesome Creator has gifted us in so many magnificent ways. Not with conceit, but certainly with confidence. Tutti frutti, oh, Rudy, that’s good!
Phillipians 1:6 tells us to be confident, in fact: “Being confident in this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (KJV) That’s mighty convincing, and confidence building, to know that our Lord has promised to bring us to completion in whatever “good work” he has set before us to perform. Talk about empowerment! Goodness, gracious, great balls of fire!
Phillipians 4:13 tells us, “I can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth me.” (KJV) How much more confidence can be acquired in any self-help, motivational class/course/tape, than to read those words from our life text book? 20 pounds to lose? I can do that! Important speech to give? Here I go! Teenager with an attitude? Just watch me! Sorry, Infomercial Guy, but you ain’t getting my $250.00 bucks, not today. I am confident in knowing and believing on the word of God, holding it in my heart and in my hand, and heading out the door just looking for mountains to move! Because the bible says I can. Not conceit, just conviction, thank you very much!
And finally, Psalm 8, boasts of us humble humans: “What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.” (NIV). So, I guess, we really are all that and a bag of chips!
I believe it was Miss Piggy who once said, “My beauty is my curse.” I hear ya, my porcine sister. But please, don’t anyone hate me because I’m beautiful. Not only beautiful, I have it on good accord that I am also fearfully and wonderfully made! Oh my! But don’t hate - appreciate! And congregate! Because you are, too. We all are. And we should all acknowledge our own beauty as our dear Miss Piggy has. Particularly the true beauty that is in the mighty eye of our ultimate beholder - Our Holy Father.
To that, I respectfully say Amen, and to quote Little Richard once more: “Wooooooooooo!”
