Well here we all are again, Mother has us all standing in line while she prepares to give us our vitamins. I never get in line first, I don’t like taking vitamins.
Mother tries to make it easier for us by giving us candy afterwards, but I still don’t like it.
The first is Scott’s Emulsion, I couldn’t read, I was too young, but I knew it was the bottle with the white thick medicine inside and the man holding a fish on the label.
When it got close to my turn, I quickly got out of line and began to run.
Mother yelled at one of my brothers. “Go get her and bring her back”.
There was no way out, I had to take it. I closed my eyes and opened my mouth and in she came with a big spoonful.
I held it in my mouth, I refused to swallow.
Mother said, “If you don’t swallow, I’ll give you another.”
Down it went, the awful taste of fish.
Mother gave me my piece of candy and I had to move to the end of the line, it wasn’t over.
Mother got out two more bottles. One of the bottles had animal candy in it and we each got one, and it was good, but the other bottle was new. In the new bottle, the pills were round and clear and Mother gave one to each of us and told us to swallow it.
I looked at that pill and said, “not me I‘m not gonna get that stuck in my throat”, so I began to look for a place to throw it away or to hide it without her seeing me so I put it in my nose.
When mother left the room I started to blow my nose to get the pill out and it wouldn’t come out. I kept blowing as hard as I could and it wouldn’t come out.
Finally, I had to go to Mother and tell her I didn’t take the pill that she told us to swallow and she said,
“then what did you do with it,” I told her, “it’s in my nose“.
Mother kindly looked at me and shook her head and removed one of the hairpins from her head and took the pill out.
