Sam’s ears perk up, turning in circles, ready to go. Chance and Max know something’s up. Eyes to Sam, over to me, then back to Sam. I think we’re ready.
They say a dog is man’s best friend. I’ve had lots of dogs in my life and by far Sam is the best I’ve ever had. Why, he’s been my best hunting companion for nigh on to two, maybe three, decades now. He’s getting down in the hips but we still go out almost everyday. I’m hoping while he’s still able to get around that he’ll teach Chance and Max how to hunt. They have all the instincts but right now they’re afraid of their own shadows.
“I’m glad I found my big flashlight, can’t imagine how it got put there. Yup, gun’s loaded. Okay, let’s go.”
We take the deer trail down towards Joe’s place. No moon tonight and it’s unusually quiet. I see the dogs sense something too. Staying real close, sniffing the air constantly.
What was that? “Quiet.” Light out. Sounds like crunching…bones breaking, something’s being eaten. Just around the bend.
Dogs are close, ears back, hair standing on end. Sam’s in front a little, head down. Chance and Max are so close they’re almost under my feet tripping me.
Sam’s heading into the bend. A growl. Oh, Sam, you’re going to scare whatever it is. Quick, the flashlight, turn it on.
The cougar! Sam’s charging!
“S…A…M…!”
“Mr. Jones, what are you doing out in a dark hallway at this time of night yelling like this. And did you steal the Nurses’ flashlight again? Come on, I’ll push you back to your room. How’d you get yourself in the wheelchair by yourself? For heaven’s sake, you don’t know what kind of trouble you could get into out here all alone.”
“Well Sam,” peering over my shoulder, “let’s take a day hunt tomorrow. Less interference with varmints then.”
Wait ‘til I tell Joe tomorrow. We almost got his cougar this time. He sure enjoys hearing about our hunts. And there’ll always be another hunt for Sam and me.
