where I am sitting
near a collection
of odd chairs,
I watch the younger children,
grubby and barefoot,
dance in and out around me
as they play their hide n’ seek games.
My attention is on the gray-bearded man
swaying in an old oak rocker
beside me. He frowns
as his stringy-haired
daughter-in-law bosses him
with a haircut and plucks
at his wildly overgrown eyebrows.
I wonder why she doesn’t trim his beard, too.
There are so many people in this family
that I don’t know who is who.
Yet they all seem to know their chores.
I watch as they dart about
busy with activities and
I am awed by their group serenity
as my father and I are invited
to share their supper.
I hear the women’s chattering
that keeps time to the
clanking of the pans
in the kitchen as
they work just inside
the screen door that’s torn
loose on the bottom right side
to let the old gray cat in.
