For years so proud and tall
Rising toward the One above
Drawing to itself those called
Couples wed and babies born
The passing of the saints
A witness to the fact of life
That time for no one waits
The world sped by and people changed
The spire alone lamented
What once had inspired, what once had brought awe
Was now just taken for granted
Its headpiece shown its weariness
The copper stained and streaked
Having born Gods many fallen tears
Upon its lofty cheeks
The church building now stood empty
The people had long ago went
The tower itself stood listing
Its purpose having all but been spent
A distant rumble grew closer
The bell rang out its last breath
The silhouette against the sky
Shook for fear of its death
A crowd began to gather
Eyes strained up towards the crown
Some quietly sobbed, as if losing a friend
The day the steeple came down
