The dams were mostly empty with just a few weeks of water left, before the animals would begin to die, if rain didn’t come soon.
The daily routine of chores was exhausting, and with this heat the vegetables in the garden would soon wither and die also.
We had moved to this property around 5 years ago and this was the worst summer yet.
Days turned into weeks, without any relief from these devastating conditions.
Today began no different from the rest, with a hot balmy night followed by an even hotter morning.
After making breakfast for the family, we gave thanks for our meal, while including a prayer asking God to please send rain.
When we had finished eating, my husband John went to tend the cattle, while our two daughters Lisa and Katie washed up the dishes.
After packing lunches, the girls and I set off down the long driveway to catch the bus for school.
I waved goodbye, and as I began to walk back to the house I spotted smoke in the distance. It looked like a bush fire, and the hot breeze was blowing it in our direction.
I ran back to warn John who had already seen it, and was beginning to round up the animals, putting them in a paddock as far away from the fire as possible.
We prepared as much as we could by clearing built up debris, and then with as much water as we could spare, we wet down the house and surrounding gardens.
Within the next half an hour we saw bush animals fleeing and birds leaving in flocks as the crackling of the fire frightened them.
As the fire got closer, the smoke got thicker and it was hard to breath.
Sparks were starting to burn closer and closer to the house, and as fast as we put them out, new ones started.
God please help us, was going over and over within me.
Finally, we had done all we could and within moments the fire was upon us.
“When you walk through the fire you will not be burned, nor shall the flames scorch you” came straight to the forefront of my mind, but I pushed it away.
“No God. I don’t think I have faith to walk through fire yet, so please can we have another alternative” I mumbled to myself.
As we moved down the driveway and away from the flames and smoke now surrounding our house, we suddenly felt a change in the air, and then…..
Plop……plop……plop, on the tin roof of the shed nearby.
I looked up, and a huge drop splashed right on my forehead.
Could it be rain! Please, please let it be lots of rain.
The smoke had been so thick that we hadn’t noticed the clouds forming above our property.
Then the sweetest music I had ever heard.
Music to wash the dirt, dust, fire and fears away.
Music to bring hope and joy….
Music to make our hearts sing…
God’s music…..rain on a tin roof.
