I pick her up, and give her a big Daddy hug. “I’m so proud of you!” She responds with a giggle and a kiss.
It’s a classic Norman Rockwell moment. That is, until Mrs. Murphy walks up. Mrs. Murphy--as in “Murphy’s Law”.
“Here are the patches you need to sew on the vest for the next club meeting.”, she said, smiling. Her tone and facial expression suggested that this assignment was a normal and effortless as breathing while asleep.
“You want me to do what?” I ask.

After receiving more than enough instructions and encouragement for at least 20 such projects, we arrive at home. Naturally, my daughter wants me to start sewing on those patches right now. “Sweetie”, I said, “I’m not going to start any sewing tonight. I will do what I can to make sure your vest is ready before next week”.
Now what my daughter doesn’t know is that I would have a better chance of beating Tiger Woods in 18 holes of golf that sewing on those patches in a week (month, year, whatever). I tell myself, “You’ll come up with something.”
Five days later I have come up with--nothing. So I swallow my male pride, pick up the phone, and call a friend form my Sunday School class. “I really need your help.” I tell her, explaining my predicament.
“You need me to do what?” she says, laughing.

Plan “B” did not work out as I had hoped, but I was relieved to learn that I was not the only person without skills with a needle and thread. I was running out of time and in dyer need of a vest (complete with patches) in two days.
Nothing will transform a small task into a mini-mountain like a deadline. And by Sunday morning, my “Mt. St. Vest” was about to erupt. Having nowhere else to turn, I said a silent prayer as I pulled in to the church parking lot. “Lord, I know that Philippians 4:19 says that You, ‘My God’, shall supply all my need. Well Lord, right now I need to have these patches put on my daughter’s vest, and I can’t do it on my own. Please provide a way for me to have her vest ready for club tonight! I thank You in advance. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.”
Late (again!), we scramble out of the car headed for Sunday School. Both the Sunday School lesson and the sermon are on “Living by Faith” (I’m trying, Lord!). The morning blurs into the noon hour, and before I know it, it is time to head home.
As we return to the car, I open the door for my daughter to get in. I start to close my door but stop when I hear someone call my name. It is the club Director, and she is waving something in the air. “I’m so glad I caught you!” she said. “I understand that your daughter needs her vest for tonight, but you might not have had enough time to sew the patches on. So I looked in the club closet, and found a vest that was given to us when a family moved away last year. Would you be interested?”
“Interested” did not begin to express how grateful I was! I must have said “Thank-you” a dozen times before saying good-bye, then got in the car with a smile, and drove home. My daughter was quiet for a moment, then she said, “God was really good to us today, wasn’t He, Daddy?” “Yes Sweetie, He really was!”
Thank-You, Father.
“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Phil 4:19 (KJV)
