“OK. We need to find the material and I’ll get it done.” This was a repeat for us. Each September I got five new pairs of shoes to match the colors in the fabrics she created for me to start the new school year. She looked carefully at the dresses I wanted, then she would go home and cut out the pattern from yesterday’s newspaper.
She was an excellent seamstress. And as she sewed she sang songs and praised her Savior’s name. This was her way of sowing seeds. She spread the good news around while nurturing and designing my wardrobe.
Every time we tell someone what Jesus Christ had done for us and what He brings us through, we are sowing God’s seed. Our testimonies spread the good news and increase His kingdom. When we give God credit for the blessings He gives and sends our way, we receive joy and peace only He can give. My mom knew and lived this peace through her sewing. She knew it was her talent and she praised God for the talent he gave her by making other peoples’ lives more pleasant.
As we grow and mature in God’s wisdom, we become like Him. We become perfect over time like the mannequin in the store window, with no flaws. It is a lifelong journey to grow in His image. Perseverance establishes the pieces of our Master’s pattern which completes the masterpiece He wishes us to become. He’ll reward us when He comes again and takes us home to spend eternity in His kingdom because we’ve planted His seed on earth.
In I John 3:9, we read: “His seed abides in those who are born of God.“ When we are born again, born in Jesus Christ, we want everybody we see to know and experience this same new heritage. We plant the seeds, we step back and pray. Those who accept Him and choose to follow in His footprints sow seeds also and His kingdom grows just as my closet filled with my mother’s art and sewing talent.
I Peter 1:23 says, “for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God.” This is a blessing. The seeds which are sown are imperishable. The seeds which are sown will last forever. The clothes my mother sewed for me have long been tossed, but the love in which she sewed for me will always live in my heart...that is the Word of God, the seed of the good news she sowed, the love she shared about her Savior. I will never forget.
