I guess I am getting to old to remember when I first heard about Jesus.
I have seen a picture of my grandmother holding me on her lap in a store front Pentecostal church. My mother was sitting in a seat closer to the front.
This was sometime during the early fifties. There is no date on this old black and white photo. What I remember about this photo is there were no empty seats in the church.
I do remember that I always had a longing to know about God.
I ask my mother on one occasion if we could go to church.
I now after seeing this photo have no idea why she had not been to church or why she may have stopped going.
All I remember is that I asked her to take me to church.
She replied that we would start going to church when she could figured out which denomination was the true church.
That was the end of this discussion for a number of years.
The next remembrance I have of going to church was when I went to Sunday school at a little church of the Nazarene on Vine St in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Then due to unfortunate circumstances I was placed in a children's home along with my sister.
We went to church every Sunday and that is where I learned about the old rugged cross that led to a beautiful garden.
The service was led by the Salvation Army.
That is where I heard this song.
In The Garden
Words and Music by C. Austin Miles
Published 1917 by Hall-Mack Co.
[Through composed]
I come to the gar-den a-lone,
While the dew is still on the ro-ses,
And the voice I hear fall-ing on my ear
The Son of God dis-clos-es.
And He walks with me and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tar-ry there
None oth-er has ev-er known.
He speaks, and the sound of his voice
Is so sweet the birds hush their sing-ing,
And the mel-o-dy, That He gave to me
With-in my heart is ring-ing.
And He walks with me and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tar-ry there
None oth-er has ev-er known.
I'd stay in the gar-den with Him
Tho' the night a-round me be fall-ing,
But He bids me go; Thro' the voice of woe
His voice to me is call-ing.
And He walks with me and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tar-ry there
None oth-er has ev-er known.
Now I celebrate everyday as an loving anniversary because Jesus walks with me and He talks with me, And He tells me I am His own, And the joy I share as we tar-ry there,
None oth-er has ev-er known.
Jesus is Lord.
