“Hey mister are you looking for Captain Charlie?” A young brown hair boy asked
“Not exactly, Jim replied and then introduced himself. "My name is Jim and your name?"
“I’m Mike. Are you from here, Jim?”
“No. Six months ago, I moved to Riverview. Charlie met me on his way out of the newspaper office. He invited me down to the dock and took me on tour of his main fishing boat the “Clipper.”
By now, they had reached the entrance to Sam’s Dinner. Jim opened the door and Mike did not hesitate entering.
He and Jim found a booth towards the back of the dinner. This morning there were the regulars sitting and chatting while drinking their morning coffee.
“Now, tell me about your weekend with Captain Charlie.” Mike said as their orders were being served.
“The weekend was like today. The sky is clear and not a cloud in sight. No wind blowing and the waters are calm. This is perfect fishing weather, for a new beginner. Well, we cast our lines into the sea and waited. I watched eagerly to see if there was a bite on my line. No, all was still for a hour. Then I felt movement on the line.”
Charlie's instructions were to keep a steady hold and to let the fish play until it was tired before reeling him in. At the end of the line was hooked a medium sized bass. The crew had talked about the “Big One.”
As Mike and Jim enjoyed their breakfast of scrambled eggs, fried bacon and biscuits, Jim continued to tell Mike about his weekend.
“That evening while sitting on the upper deck, Charlie began to share with me how he came to know the Lord. He said he knew he was a sinner and like Jonah. He ran from the Lord.” Jim paused to see if Mike was following him.
“What happened? Did a whale swallow Charlie?” Mike asked with a grin.
“No, whale for Charlie,” Jim replied,” But Charlie went through a very bad storm one night. As he labored to steer the ship away from the rocks, he screamed out to God to bring him through the storm..” God answered that prayer of Charlie’s.
Charlie's friend began to talk,“Charlie, our lives are like a boat that is out on the sea of life. God kept you from crashing into the rocks. He wants to do the same for you spiritually. All we have to do is to confess our sins and accept what Jesus did on the cross. Through His death He paid the price of your sin.” Charlie nodded his head as his friend continued to share.
“I want Jesus to come into my life and to save me.” Charlie said with a broken heart. As he prayed and accepted the Lord, he felt the peace of God come over him. His life no longer felt empty. Yes he was a changed man.” Jim stated.
“So, Charlie shared this with you the weekend you went?” Mike asked.
“Yes he did Mike. I’ve not been the same since.” Jim said thankfully. He continued to pray and asking the Holy Spirit to help Mike understand. That he would accept the Lord, too.
Therefore, you are saying that Jesus died on the cross because He loved us?” Mike questioned
“Yes.” Jim said and pulled his New Testament out and showed Mike John 3:16.
“For God so loved world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have everlasting life."Mike then bowed his head and asked the Lord to save him.
Hearing the Clipper’s horn, “There’s Charlie!” Mike said heading for the door. Jim was not too far behind him.
When Charlie came off the boat and met his friends. Mike shared how Jim led him to the Lord. Charlie said,” See, as Jesus said, ‘I will make you fishers of men.You can share what He has done for you.” Mike grinned as he began to walk down the dock to find his “catch.”
