For example when they could print the Bible enmass instead of having to copy by hand, people could read God’s Word for themselves and a spiritual revival took place in Europe. Now the priests weren’t the ones to tell the people what God’s word said. They could read for themselves and know god was speaking to them.
Yes, reading is so important but many who have this ability take it for granted and don’t read. How will these people ever grow spiritually if they don’t feed themselves and so just coast a long. Those who cherish his gift are the ones who will read and grow to maturity.
A good illustration of this is the work done among tribal people world wide.
For generations these people have lived their lives in the same sub-existent level. What they know and remember has been passed down to them from generation to generation. They are steeped in ignorance and Satan’s tight grippe.
When a missionary comes in and settles among these people, we amazing things happen. The biggest contribution is a written language that they can understand. A whole new world opens up to then as they learn to read.
Further transformations take place when the missionary can speak their language well enough to preach. As the gospel is taught and people learn to read, they are able to read God’s Word for themselves. The excitement and joy they experience is phenomenal. Their first thought is of the next village.
Reading opens up a whole new world, Their lives have purpose. The fear of appeasing evil spirits is replaced by the new life in Christ. Growth is this new life happens so much faster if they can read for themselves.
Yes, I think that reading has been the greatest invention that mankind had come up with and had done more for the advancement of civilization than anything else.
