I remember learning to read. It was my first year at school. I must have been about five years old and I thought I had the whole system figured out. If it’s a picture of a yellow banana, you say “Yellow banana” and everybody says “Well done.”.
My theory became unstuck however when my Dad realised what I was doing and began to cover up the pictures. How unfair was that? I mean, how was I meant to read it then?
Then came holidays, and a visit from my aunt and her two children, my cousins. Her youngest, Simon, is six months younger than me. I endeavoured to show him how clever I was, but calamity struck when he picked up a book and began reading to me. He didn’t even look at the pictures, just the words. How dare he! He was practically a baby still, at least in my eyes, and here he was, trying to shame me in my own home, by showing off how clever he was.
Well, suddenly, I had found my inspiration to really read. I learned quickly after that, and by Grade Two I was reading C.S. Lewis’ ‘Narnia’ books on my own. Mind you, my Grade Two teacher didn’t seem to think much of me because I didn’t want to read the books she gave me. But why would I? Who cares if “Jack and Jill see a cat” when I could be immersing myself in the wonders of Narnia?
As for my show-off cousin, well, he’s still cleverer than I am. I guess he always will be. I’ve given up trying to beat him and now I just thank God for the gift of literacy and the world it has opened up for me.

I would expand this. Tell us a bit more of what happened. Did you ask your cousin how he knew how to read? Take us back, and try to remember all the details. Make up the ones you don't remember. We'll never know the difference. ;) It could also use some spacing, to make it easier to read. Great job for your first entry! Keep writing!
