God created a paradigm for our lives. The Bible tells us that God knew everything about us and our lives before we were born. We can’t see that paradigm. It is up to ourselves to push through life, courageously making decisions that, though well-planned, could land us anywhere.
But God knows where we are at all times. He can see the paradigm of our lives as clearly as we can see the morning sunrise in the eastern sky, and He knows exactly what He is doing.
There was the time my girlfriend (then fiancée) of two years decided to break off our relationship. I couldn’t understand why God would let me have two years (though tough) with her, get close to her child, start to build our lives together, then take her away from me. When I met my wife, Lauren, five months later, I knew exactly why He had let that happen. He had prepared me for my future wife by putting me in a relationship with someone who was established and much older than me. I left that relationship knowing what it took to make a family work.
There was the time last week when Lauren got upset because we are not where we want to be in life. She has two more years of college, we live in an apartment, and have no money to have a baby. I felt the same way. I thought I would be much further along, with a successful career as a writer/filmmaker. I guess God had other plans. I went to bed that night sad and depressed, trying to think of a way I could make a quick buck and save money. The next morning, as I dropped Lauren off for work, she told me I could get a haircut even though money was tight. I really needed one. Lauren used to work in the corporate office of the company trust to make my hair pretty. The stylist I always see, who is the store manager, asked me to run to the bank to get some change for the register. I did, and she gave me a free haircut for it. I didn’t want to take it, never did when Lauren was working with there, but I knew the Lord was giving me a gift. I thanked the stylist with a grateful heart and called Lauren the moment I got home to tell her how loving and providing God is for all of our needs.
I am human. I get angry at God, sometimes hate Him for the things He allows to happen. Regardless of how many times I see the goodness of His will, even when it hurts, I continually revert back to the Christian that can only drink milk.
“Father, give me the gift of Your vision. I want to see this life through Your eyes. I want to be filled with absolute, unbridled faith that things happen for a reason. That whether You instruct events or simply allow them to happen, every single one of us, right down to the weakest of the weak and the strongest of the strong is under Your mighty, watchful, loving hand.”
Friends, I don’t want to see what God sees. I don’t want to know where I’ll be tomorrow. I just want to have the tranquility of heart, the wisdom of mind, and the vision of His grace to say, no matter what the circumstance, “You are good, Lord. I love You, and I trust You.”
