Love: just a lot of mush and nonsense? God didn’t think so when He created this world, and especially us. He put His best into us, and what did we do in return? Did we give Him our best? No. We turned traitor and looked for other ways to express love. We’ve been called harlots because we look everywhere for love and acceptance except to the One who loved us more than we deserve.
But God didn’t give up on us. He continued to love us and call us to Himself, not with loud overtures, but gently. He let us know that no matter how much we mess up He loves us and will continue to love us. Because He loves us more than we could possibly imagine with our limited understanding, He sent His son, Jesus, to die for us on a rugged, cruel cross.
But it wasn’t on the cross that Jesus love was demonstrated. It was in the Garden when he prayed for God to take away the burden of sin off His shoulders. But God didn’t listen. He turned His face away from His only Son. He knew that the only way that we could become clean from the stain of sin, was through His death, His shed blood.
But where was the blood shed? First, it was in the Garden of Gethsemane where His sweat was great drops of blood that poured out on the ground. Second, it was at the whipping post where He was whipped past recognition, and again His blood was poured out on the ground. Third, it was poured out on the ground on the way to Golgotha as He carried the cross to His own execution. Fourth it was on the cross when the Roman Centurion pierced His side and blood and water flowed and was poured out on the ground again.
The blood healed the earth that had been cursed when Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden. The blood healed our minds, by giving us peace, when He wore the crown, and blood dripped over His face that bore only love. The blood healed our work, when He was pierced through His hands, and the blood healed our walk, when His feet were pierced.
It is said that love kept Jesus on the cross until He uttered: It is finished. Only love can finish the work that was begun. Only love can go willingly to a cross, and die naked and rejected. Only love can stay on the cross when He was rejected by His own Father, and despised by the very people He wanted to save.
Just a lot of mush and nonsense? Not to God. He loved us so much that He sent His only Son to die for us, so that we can have fellowship with Him and gain heaven as our reward.
God doesn’t want anyone to perish, so He gives us every chance to accept Him and His love, Jesus Christ. Will you accept His love today? It’s just a prayer away.
