‘What’s up ma’ man?’
‘Nothing Brother.’ Came Reno’s response.
‘You never call me Brother before.’ Jake started to nervously laugh ‘Why the change in you? Anyway ma’ man you ready to roll?’
‘Not today Jake. I’ll give it a miss!’ Reno replied.
‘Well alright dude but it’s your loss!’ Jake quipped back before slamming the phone down in discriminating anger.
It was due to that mobile (phone) discussion that changed the events of the day as Jake swung helplessly, in the park without his sidekick. It had been the first time in ten years that they had been apart from each other. Jake saw opportunities of beating people up and robbing them off their money whilst Reno was busy filling his selfishness with the word of God. Jake was far from Reno’s thoughts but through their continuous friendship, he saw a way of keeping his friendship alive and decided to ring Jake.
‘Yo man.’ Jake said on answering the phone.
‘What ya’ doing dude?’ Reno asked
‘I’m bored.’ They both said in unison.
‘Wanna get together.’ Jake asked.
‘You come round here.’ Reno replied.
‘O.k.’ Jake answered.
Jake wanted to know whom it was that had taken over his roll of friendship. He ran as fast as his solid legs would carry him. His running didn’t stop there. He even jogged up the concrete steps and inside the double doors leading to the flat, where Reno lived with his mama. Reno had been cleaning up- when Jake rung the doorbell. The voices he heard over the phone were no more.
‘So what happening ma’ man?’ Jake asked.
‘Get yourself in here!’ Reno responded hurriedly.
He stammered into the lounge behind Reno and noticed a book in the middle of the opal table. Reno had purposely placed the good book there and knew Jake would pick it up, just like he always did with books.
‘This isn’t just any old book man.’ Jake spoke nervously fast. ‘Just what ya’ trying to tell me?’
‘Dude the time is near and I can’t keep on like this. Are you with me? You’re either with me or your not but I know the Lord is calling me Jake and with us being friends I know we can do this together like the brothers we’ve been for years, but this time we can become brothers in Christ and stop our selfishness.’
