Space is a word that can be used to describe several areas. The word space can refer to outer space, the solar system, aeronautics, and astronomy. It can also be used to define the size of a building, office, or home. We now have a profession that deals with the efficient organization of space.
I like to think of space as an intangible element of quality that we have in our lives. Our personal space will say a great deal about who we are as a person. Our likes and dislikes can be represented in the way we decorate and use our personal space. I prefer that my personal space is pleasant and peaceful. I choose to decorate my space with Monet. I choose to have the sound of Mozart in my space. I choose to have a fragrant candle burning in my space.
During the course of this past week, I have listened to two separate interviews on National Public Radio that have helped me appreciate even more my personal space. Earlier in the week I heard an interview with a woman who is currently living in another location due to Hurricane Katrina. She traveled to New Orleans for a funeral. Not only did she experience the sorrow associated with the funeral, she experienced sorrow of the loss of the personal space she had always know in New Orleans.
The second interview was with a woman who is forced to leave Iraq and establish a home in a new environment. Iraq represents her heritage. Her family and her husband’s family have only lived in Iraq. They are now forced to leave their homeland because there is no way of making a living. The basic need for survival has left them no alternative. Even though I was listening to her words through an interpreter, her words were choked with tears of sorrow. This woman was leaving the only personal space ever known to her.
I wonder about a conversation between these two women if they were ever to meet. They are miles apart and yet suffering identical sorrow. The sorrow of one woman is caused by events of nature while the sorrow of the other woman is caused by decisions of mankind. The cause doesn’t determine the depth of sorrow.
These two interviews led me to think about my own personal space. I take so many things for granted. My time here on earth should be about sharing. I should share not only my personal space but myself. I am reminded of Matthew 6: 19 – 21, “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where they can be eaten by moths and get rusty, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where they will never become moth-eaten or rusty and where they will be safe from thieves. Wherever your treasure is, there you heart and thoughts will be also.” (NLV) Each of us need to get out of our personal space more and share ourselves with others.
