Topic: Home (01/09/06)
Home…it seems the older we get, the more ambiguous the idea becomes. Family structures change, houses get remodeled, new opportunities take us to new places, and we lose the familiarity of what home meant so many years ago. In recent years, I have found my physical residence in many different places, but none of them have truly encapsulated the meaning of home for me. It would be easy for me to label the place I grew up as my home, but would that not miss the deeper meaning? In truth, home is not a plot of ground or four walls and a roof; home is the state of being in an environment that was created for the sole purpose of having you there.
For the Christian, home is often identified as Heaven. While this is a beautiful metaphor of the life that lies in wait for us, it can be discouraging to think that we can never really experience home here on earth. While it is true that we can never experience the unceasingly complete joy of home until we get there, there are tiny glimpses of it all around us. When laughing and feasting with family and friends, we feel completely at ease and comfortable…that feeling is home. When we find ourselves in the midst of the seemingly unbearable storms of life and an unexpected peace wraps itself around us…that is a window into the beauty and comfort that waits for us in our true home.
At this point in my life, I find myself leaving a place that I never would have considered my home, but the friends I have found here have made it home for me. When I am with them, I feel like I am in the right place. There is no longing to be somewhere else, and I believe that is a key element of home. They have been Christ to me, and there is nothing more home-like than that.

A very nice devotional. Break it down into 3 or 4 paragraphs to improve the flow. The last half was especially well-written.
