Food choices, too many choices are before us as we ask ourselves; “What will I eat?” It is a real dilemma and requires endless hours of our precious time. Our senses are on overload as we wrestle with this decision several times everyday. We must eat to live so we might as well enjoy every luscious bite while we are nourishing our bodies.
We know we should choose well, but our cravings often win the war raging inside us. This struggle to choose just the right food just has to be the worst thing in the whole world! Nothing compares to the problem of having too much food available.
Buffet style eating is a great way to solve our problem. No decision is necessary. Just pile up our plates with everything and make as many trips as necessary to get our money’s worth.
If we are in a hurry fast food will work. Why do they call it that? We are still waiting. It is just in our cars after we speak to the magic box. A couple of hours after devouring our “meal”, we are hungry again. Our bodies didn’t register that food had passed our lips and gone to our hips.
Food is wonderful when you have the time to enjoy it. Sitting down with friends and family enhances the taste. The more food the merrier. It is all about us and our happiness, right? But, still the question is before us, “What will we eat?” Our problem intensifies as we consider fat free, low carb, and calorie count. We should eat healthy but not overeat.
People around the world just don’t understand our problem. It is all-consuming and weighs heavy on us. Often, we have so much food that we have to throw some away. Our moms have told us to eat it all because some people in the world were starving. We shook our heads and sarcastically suggested that our leftovers be sent to them.
Maybe it is time to grow up and gain a new perspective. Should we be so consumed with our happiness and food? There must be a higher purpose. May the words of a Jewish Carpenter and Messiah change our hearts. “My food,” said, Jesus, is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.” (John 4:34 NIV).
Let’s be less concerned about ourselves but passionate about reaching out to others. Yes, many people need food but they also need to know about Jesus, who is the bread of life that satisfies the hungry soul. May we feast on him and his word and be found faithful in completing his work.
God’s plan for reaching a lost world has not changed. The only commandment to us in the Triune God says, “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20 NIV)
