Shoes tappin.
Melodic sounds of Jesus’ love .
The unmistakable sound of leather black-backed bible pages.
The echo of familiar bible verses.
Cries at the altar for peace, reconciliation, and justice.
The reverberation of angelic, polyphonic choir voices.
The repeated 'tap-tap' of my white buckle shoes kissing each other.
Momma uttering in my ear, “Relax, chile. Stop fidgeting”.
Syncopated hand-claps of exultation.
A wailing Hammond organ, thumping piano, and pounding drums.
Large-brimmed hats that ‘speak’ long before its model says a word.
The squeak of black leather shoes against the store-front tile.
The 'clink clink clink' of coins hitting the base of the oak-stained, gold-trimmed collection plate.
Testimonies of salvation, sanctification, and justification.
Shouts of praise, freedom, and jubilation.
Scratching sounds as I seek relief from my itchy pink, pastel dress.
Momma’s unsympathetic warning in my ear, “I said sit still, chile. Chill out!”.
A Celebration of the baptism of the Spirit.
The interjection of multiple holy-dance breaks.
The babel of women slain in the spirit.
Unified prayers for peace, healing, and reconciliation.
The joyous call of the pastor, “Can I get an amen?”.
The enthusiastic response of parishioners, “AMEN! Preach brother!”.
The ecstatic resonation of Sister Jones speaking in tongues.
My giggles as I playfully mock Sister Jones.
The whack of Momma’s hand against my thigh as she gives me the evil eye and utters not a word.
