An intoxicating airborne sweetness borne of freshly fallen rain merged into a ray of sunshine and in that instant the earthy warmth had invaded my nostrils.
Inside my socks, my toes tapped notes of freedom to be buried in green grass and frolic in brightly colored flip-flops.
The urge to call the salon for a haircut suddenly seemed undeniable.
I felt the need to return home and scour my flower garden for a shoot of green bursting from the earth promising breathtaking beauty.
Maybe this day on my calendar did not read “First Day of Spring” but what did it know? It could not smell what I indeed smelled. Nor did it feel the need, as I did, to shed its old skin like a weathered snake.
Spring had arrived there was no denying it. Soon the smell would encircle the budding maples and summon the bluebells to emerge from their slumber. Traveling upon a soft breeze it would welcome the songbirds home. It would then arch across the starlit sky and whisper to the spring peepers to break the silence of old man winter with a chorus of croaking. It would continue its invasion as it ruffled through the feathers of a great horned owl causing it to hoot in anticipation.
Bit, by bit, it will awaken the earth bringing forth spring. Person by person will inhale its scent, just as I had, and recognize the changing of a season.
How I love, the smell of spring.
